Bookcraft's current status

Is Bookcraft still in active use as an imprint? When I wrote this article in 2008 no sources reported it was in disuse or shut down by Deseret Book. But I just saw this edit from User:Kslarsen (whose knowledge of LDS publishing I respect) saying there have been no Bookcraft titles since 2006, citing Worldcat.

Google Books lists Mormon authors with Bookcraft during 2003-2006, including Jack Weyland, Margaret Young, Dean Hughes, Janice Kapp Perry, and Ron Carter, although the latest Mormon book there was 2005. For 2007-2010 I found no Mormon titles, only works by similarly-named publishers like "Americana Bookcraft" or "Book Craft" from Ibadan, Nigeria.

According to the 1999 merger announcements Bookcraft was supposed to carry all LDS fiction, which is why Dean Hughes's work went from Deseret Book to Bookcraft. However, Deseret Book continued to issue new fiction, such as The Great and the Terrible series (2003-2008), Saving Kristen (2005), Alone, Together (2006), The Boxmaker's Son (2007), The Undaunted (2009). Some post-merger Bookcraft titles have been recently reissued under the Deseret Book name, like John Bytheway's Honoring the Priesthood as a Deacon, a Teacher, and a Priest and Dean Hughes's Hearts of the Children series, which means that Hughes is now back with Deseret Book again! This 2007 Mormon literature review noted that Deseret Book had strongly increased its fiction offerings and it was a fiction imprint along with Bookcraft.

Does this mean the Bookcraft name has been discarded and nobody noticed? Is it coincidental that in 2006 Deseret Book acquired Covenant Communications, a strong LDS fiction publisher? If Bookcraft died, wouldn't somebody notice and say something? ——Rich jj (talk) 20:32, 28 January 2010 (UTC)

Rich, it may help you to know that this kind of unnoticed death of a publishing imprint happens all the time. Even within a publishing company, they don't always realize that they have killed off an imprint, because sometimes they have unconsciously stopped using it. Imprints are simply a marketing categorization or branding. And if a brand isn't helping the publisher sell books, the publisher will simply stop using it and put another name on the spine. Since the decision of what name to put on a spine is often made on a case-by-case basis, the publisher can sometimes not even realize that they have stopped. I see. I believe the publisher is aware in this case since the website of the new Deseret Media Companies division of DMC lists Deseret Book as publishing "under two imprints — Deseret Book ... and Shadow Mountain", which excludes Bookcraft and Eagle Gate. [1] Covenant, Excel, and Seagull are still listed alongside Deseret Book Publishing as components of Deseret Book Company.

In returning to this topic, the Original Research tag was added to this footnote over in the Deseret Book article. That seems appropriate, and since I can't find any published sources corroborating this silent death, I've copied the footnote here and removed it from the article.

Apparently this imprint is no longer in use, since a search on WorldCat on January 17, 2010 reveals no books published after 2006 under the Bookcraft imprint.
