Where edit

infobox currently states that Blackall is nw ( northwest ) of Longreach. No it isn't ! It is definitely south of Longreach somewhere.Eregli bob (talk) 06:30, 21 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

I think that was my careless mistake, now fixed. Thanks for pointing it out! -- Mattinbgn\talk 06:51, 21 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Black Stump error edit

Quote: "Blackall is also the home of the original Black Stump, which marks the original Astro Station established in 1887"

How can this be so, when even the wiki page on the Black Stump says, Quote: "The term "Black stump" was used as land markers on a surveyors plan and was first referred to as a boundary marker in a New South Wales court case involving a land law dispute. See R v West [1831] NSWSupC 66 (12 October 1831)."

Something that occurs at least 55 years later can hardly be the original, and makes the entire section false.

Australia has lots of trees and lots of bushfires, so there must be many black stumps all over the country in a physical sense. I think the NSW court case is using the term in that context, as a means of specifying a particular property boundary. However, the use of the term "black stump" beyond which civilisation does not exist (or whatever) is not the subject of the land boundary case. Given the size of Australia, it seems reasonable that people in different areas may have used the term "beyond the black stump" to refer to remote areas in their own part of Australia. The Black Stump article documents some of these claims, including Blackall's. I've weakened the sentence in question to be a "claim" rather than a fact, since I agree with you that this isn't proven.
