Schoolgirl Illustration edit
In the title illustration by Thornton D. Skidmore, where the girl is by the side of the car --- a very dark charcoal type of drawing typical of that period --- what exactly is that curious garment composed of straps she's wearing ? Presumably this would have been instantly recognisable back then ( which shows how rapidly ordinary things disappear from common consciousness ).
She has on, ankle-strap shoes; socks; a hat; a short-sleeved blouse; a gymslip; and this weird arrangement of hanging straps, made possibly of canvas or leather...
Maybe the artist was American, here it gives his life-dates as 1884 - 1956 File:Jeeves in the Springtime illustration 01.jpg and therefore it was more of an American fashion. I've never seen it in British school stories of that time.
A quick glance at the story doesn't mention her attire, nor any sporting gear.
She climbed in at the back. A red-haired young person with a snub-nose and an extremely large grin. Her age, I should imagine, would be about twelve.
