The first trivium points out that the "... or Mary" joke "is a clear reference to the historical Queen Elizabeth's sister Mary Tudor and possibly also to her cousin Mary, Queen of Scots, with both of whom Elizabeth was on less-than-friendly terms."

I think the joke is actually about the fact that so many of the women around Elizabeth were named Mary. Certainly, to a schoolboy reading about the Elizabethan era, or to an adult remembering his school history, it seems as if everyone but the Queen was named Mary: Mary Queen of Scots, Bloody Mary Tudor, Mary Duchess of Suffolk, Lady Mary Grey, Mary of Guise, and countless others of lesser importance.

But if it is meant to refer to one Mary, it's clearly her cousin, not her (half-)sister. Assuming the show takes place toward the beginning of Elizabeth's reign, Mary Stuart had declared herself Queen of England, married the French Dauphin, and refused to ratify the Treaty of Edinburgh giving up her claim and recognizing Elizabeth. Mary Tudor, by contrast, was dead, and had gone out on reasonably good terms with Elizabeth, including leaving Elizabeth the kingdom in her will, assuming that both she and her "child" should die in childbirth (it was a false pregnancy and there was no child). The half-sisters had been very close at times, although politics had made them bitter enemies at other times. Centralized TV Episode Discussion

Over the past months, TV episodes have been redirected by (to name a couple) TTN, Eusebeus and others. No centralized discussion has taken place, so I'm asking everyone who has been involved in this issue to voice their opinions here in this centralized spot, be they pro or anti. "Bob" origin

A while ago, an IP added the following section, stating it was "personally known trivia": "Rowan Atkinson's amusing and peculiar way of pronouncing the name 'Bob' was originally used when talking to his one-time landlord, barrister and Deputy High Court Judge Robert Moxon-Browne QC. The two men remain in contact.(ref Robert Moxon Browne QC)." However, I was under the impression it was because Atkinson has a stammer, and has problems pronouncing "B"s.
