Bathtub gin refered to gin that was mixed with mineral oil and wood alcohol which blinded or killed hundreds. The Kennedys were heavily blamed for it. Bathtub gin is made by adding juniper flavoring to alcohol, whereas juniper berries are in the mix distilled to make real gin. This is similar to fake absinthe made by adding anise and wormwood to vodka, whereas anise and wormwood are among the mix distilled to make true absinthe. The fakes are generally poor substitutes, often are poisonous, and are usually promoted by gov't efforts to prohibit the real product. --Naaman Brown (talk) 11:45, 29 July 2012 (UTC)Reply
There’s actually a misconception out there about the term “Bathtub Gin”. Most people believe the term describes where the ingredients were mixed: a bathtub. Add a bit of mold, soap scum, and maybe some body hair, you are bound to have something special. Actually, this could explain New Amsterdam Gin, which I think kind of tastes like feet.
