What is the history of this item of furniture? Pioneer-era families had a medicine chest, a box holding nostrums, philtres, electuaries, pills, potions and minims of snake oil. Rarely did they possess a bathroom. At what point did the chest raise itself off the floor, attach itself to the wall, hide behind a mirrored door? It must have been the same time that the pioneer folks got fancified and started washing theyselfs once a week, and built a room to do it in. What is the connection between bathing and medicine ?
