Merge edit

This article certainly seems like it should be merged with Environmental issues with shipping, an article that needs to be fleshed out and in which the information in this article would be better served.--Yaksar (let's chat) 19:54, 27 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Propose adding text on National Research Council Report edit

In 2011, the National Research Council released a report that discussed plans to regulate living organisms carried in ballast water. I'd like to add the following text about the report:

To minimize the spread of invasive species in U.S. waterways, the Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Coast Guard are developing plans to regulate the concentration of living organisms discharged in the ballast water of ships. [1] A June 2011 National Research Council study provided advice on the process of setting these limits. The study found that determining the exact number of organisms that could be expected to launch a new population is complex. It suggested an initial step of establishing a benchmark for the concentrations of organisms in ballast water below current levels, and then using models to analyze experimental and field-based data to help inform future decisions about ballast water discharge standards. [2]

Does this seem OK? Earlgrey101 (talk) 17:23, 22 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Sounds very appropriate for the Ballast water regulation in the United States rather than Ballast water discharge and the environment. -- Alan Liefting (talk - contribs) 20:40, 22 March 2012 (UTC)Reply
OK, I will add it over there instead. Thanks! Earlgrey101 (talk) 14:02, 26 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Article incorrect edit

(This is my first post and I don't know what I'm doing.) This article on ballast water is incorrect. There is a long (15 year) history of litigation to bring ship discharges of ballast water, containing invasive species, under the permitting program of the Clean Water Act. I am happy to provide this information or it can be obtained from two websites: EPA's Vessel General Permit and NorthwestEnvironmentalAdvocates.org. NWEA (talk) 00:01, 2 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

Welcome to Wikipedia. Please take a shot at editing the article yourself, and you can cite the references you mentioned. There's a tutorial on editing articles at WP:TUTOR. Don't worry about making it look perfect; I and others can help with formatting, etc., if needed. Also, please take a look at a related article, Ballast water regulation in the United States. That one goes into more detail; it may need similar corrections/updates. Moreau1 (talk) 03:19, 3 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

Proposed merge with Ballast Water Management edit

The following discussion is an archived record of a request for comment. Please do not modify it. No further edits should be made to this discussion. A summary of the conclusions reached follows.
Proposed target has morphed into Ballast Water Management Convention, so the original proposal no longer applies. fgnievinski (talk) 05:53, 3 October 2023 (UTC)Reply

same topic, also covered in Sailing ballast Ita140188 (talk) 08:44, 8 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

Agreed. The Ballast Water Management article is actually an article on the International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships' Ballast Water and Sediments, so the content can be put under a section titled (say) International efforts. Ciridae (talk) 04:30, 30 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

Duplication edit

This article is duplicated in Ballast tank#Environmental concerns. It also used to be duplicated in Sailing_ballast#Environmental_impacts_and_regulations, but I've moved that section into Ballast_water_discharge_and_the_environment#Discussion. fgnievinski (talk) 05:55, 3 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
