this is the WORST landmass in the world. why don't the canadians kick it out of the country? --B. Phillips 09:19, 11 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

  • I don't understand your question. What purpose would it serve to remove Baffin Island from Canada? Em3rald 01:14, 2 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Whoa, I'd never even heard of the Baffin Islands until I was looking at pictures of Alex Lowe climbing Sail Peak in the "Baffin Islands." Checked it out. The land/ice mass is stunning. Go to (cut and paste) http://www.npr.org/programs/day/features/2006/oct/wiltsie/gallery.html to see this amazing climb/climber/photographer. N.Heward 3 0ctober 2006

It's said to make magnificent hunting ground, and no doubt very scenic.

I heard there were nordic stone carvings on the island, from around 1000 a.d. ... is this true?

Following looks erroneous: "Japanese settlement of Baffin 10,000,000 people"

Scientists have found what they call hints of the earth's original recipe in an outcrop of rocks along a remote coast of Baffin Island. The chemical composition of the Arctic rocks hasn't changed in 4.5 billion years, which makes it about the same age as the earth itself. from www.theglobeandmail.com —Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.121.163.199 (talk) 19:06, 24 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

fauna edit

it seems that many animals on mainland nunavut don't exist on baffin island. is there a reason for this? can we add an explanation in the article? also where does the inuit name for the island derive from or what does it mean?--Sonjaaa (talk) 15:16, 2 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

The name according to the Inuktitut Living Dictionary it translates to "Baffin Island" which would mean that the Qikiqtaaluk Region is the Baffin Island Region but it used to be the Baffin Region. It turns out that "qikiqtaq" means island so it's possible that the name is in some way related to that but I'm guessing. The only major animal that seems to be missing from the island is the muskox but there are sveral smaller ones not listed that can be found at List of land mammals of Nunavut. Arctic Wolf? edit

Shouldn't it be the Baffin Island Wolf? SilverserenC 20:12, 10 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Barnes Ice Cap retreating since at least the early 1960s? edit

Citation is needed for this claim. Evidence disputing this claim can be found in TIME Magazine article Another Ice Age? (June 24, 1974): Areas of Baffin Island in the Canadian Arctic, for example, were once totally free of any snow in summer; now they are covered year round.. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Xificurk (talkcontribs) 22:28, 7 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

File:Sea Ice off Baffin Island.jpg to appear as POTD soon edit

Hello! This is a note to let the editors of this article know that File:Sea Ice off Baffin Island.jpg will be appearing as picture of the day on September 5, 2011. You can view and edit the POTD blurb at Template:POTD/2011-09-05. If this article needs any attention or maintenance, it would be preferable if that could be done before its appearance on the Main Page so Wikipedia doesn't look bad. :) Thanks! howcheng {chat} 01:55, 4 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

This natural-colour image shows winter sea ice melting off the eastern coastline of Canada's Baffin Island in summer (the only clouds visible here are along the right edge). Eddies along the coast have fashioned the ice into interlocking swirls, especially near Cumberland Sound (centre). Farther north, the ice is not melting as much. The sea ice retreat captured in this image appears typical of seasonal melt. Since the turn of the 21st century, however, Arctic sea ice extent has declined sharply, experiencing a series of low summertime extents and poor wintertime recoveries.Photo: Jeff Schmaltz, MODIS Rapid Response Team, Goddard Space Flight Center

Map edit

This isn't a very good map. I think it should be removed. Thoughts? Kennonv (talk) 05:17, 24 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Which would you replace it with? CambridgeBayWeather (talk) 07:02, 24 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Do we really need to go find a citation for "Baffin Island is traversed by the northwesterly line of equal latitude and longitude", when the map clearly shows 70N 70W on the island? It seems to me that stating such a claim based on a graphical work (e.g. making comments supported by said map) is not fundamentally different from stating one based on a written work (e.g. paraphrasing a secondary source). 71.79.237.34 (talk) 02:30, 29 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

What I see is a trivial statement. Yes, the 70° lat & long (and 69, 71, 72 ...) and a good map is a valid ref for that. Question is -- so what? How is that notable and what reliable ref discusses it? Removed as trivia. If a source can be found discussing the factoid and stating its importance, feel free to add such. Vsmith (talk) 02:59, 29 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

Geology edit

Need some geology info added. There's a couple of diamond mines on the island (like Chidliak owned by Peregrine Diamonds Ltd.) Jhansonxi (talk) 14:09, 14 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Demographics edit

The Demographics section refers to the "Indians" Should this not be Native Americans? or is there actually a bunch of people from India living there? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2001:56A:76B1:4E00:51D9:ADE7:44A4:2363 (talk) 04:19, 22 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

No. We use what the census says. If you follow the link it goes to First Nations, the term used in Canada. On the other hand Native Americans is a redirect to Native Americans in the United States. CambridgeBayWeather, Uqaqtuq (talk), Sunasuttuq 18:41, 23 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

Nunatsiaq News edit

Should the Nunatsiaq News, a weekly newspaper, be considered a reliable source when it comes to rewriting the early history of North America? They are cited for much of the information that Europeans might have been present on Baffin Island hundreds of years before the Norse arrived in Greenland in about 985. Jerry Stockton (talk) 17:58, 10 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

I co-sign this concern. 2607:FEA8:BFA0:BD0:6958:16F0:B5DC:A055 (talk) 21:16, 20 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

Effects of Climate changes on Baffin Island edit

Daily I read about the consequences that human caused climate changes expose the whole Artic region to, and I would suspect also and especially places like Baffin Island and Greenland - yet these developments and the consequences are not mentioned with one word in the article (at least as I see it, besides from a comment about the Barnes Ice Cap retreating, and some sceptic rejecting it in the Talk-section). Should this important issue not be dealt with in further, adequately sourced detail? I am prompted to write this, since I just read an article about how the ice retreats bc. of rising temperatures, exposing plants 1000's of years old (in Danish): https://www.dr.dk/nyheder/viden/klima/arktis-smelter-planter-gemt-i-over-100000-aar-dukker-frem-af-isen. And yes, it's a scientific fact: https://doi.org/10.1038/s41467-019-08307-w. I would strongly suggest this information aspect is added toe the BI article, but perhaps by someone more pro than me. Thank you;) Thoslandia —Preceding undated comment added 11:31, 29 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

"History" edit

There's exactly one sentence about the Indigenous inhabitants about the island, and the rest is theoretical, largely circumstantial wanking about Vikings. Seriously??? 2607:FEA8:BFA0:BD0:6958:16F0:B5DC:A055 (talk) 21:15, 20 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

location? edit

"it is located at 68°N 70°W"
More like 65-73°N 65-88°W. As if an 500,000 km² island would be in one tiny coordinate. 46.132.29.186 (talk) 02:31, 2 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

I'm not sure if you noticed or not but the coordinates are sourced. At the same time most people will understand that the island covers more than just a single coordinate. The way that {{coord}} works means that it is restricted to a single coordinate. CambridgeBayWeather (solidly non-human), Uqaqtuq (talk), Huliva 05:15, 5 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
