Baby Huey & the Babysitters sometimes classifed as garage rock edit

The term "garage rock" could be added to the genres mentioned for Baby Huey & The Babysitters. That may seem surprising, since this was a black group, better known for soul and funk, but this classification has sometimes been applied to their early work. Garage Hangover has a wonderful profile on them. [1] Two of thier songs, "Monkey Man" and "Messin' With the Kid" are quintessential garage rock.

Though 60s garage rock is usually seen as a predominately white phenominon, there were some notable exceptions. Obviously, the legendary L.A. integrated group, Love (band), headed by Arthur Lee is one huge one. Arthur Lee was viewed by garage bands then (and devotees of the genre now) as practically a deity, in the same way that Jimi Hedrix is seen as such in the larger world of rock. Certainly, garage bands were greatly influenced by early black rock and roll heroes such as Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley. Numerous garage rock songs featured Chuck Berry style riffs or Bo Diddley beats in thier songs.

I have always thought that there should have been a larger black presence in garage rock, but with so many incredible things going on at Motown, Stax, Muscle Shoals, and Atlantic, it is perfectly understandable why. And, certain white garage bands such as The Rationals were highly influenced by soul. And you never know--black rock might become the next big thing. I can see possibility of a black garage band movement in the not-too-distant future. And Baby Huey will be cited as an influence. Garagepunk66 (talk) 07:37, 13 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
