Primary topic? edit

"Autocar" should point to (Autocar, the truck-maker. It is the oldest motor vehicle brand in North America and is a far-larger company than the Autocar magazine. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sedimentary (talkcontribs) 03:27, 28 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

After three years with no comments I've now changed this: Autocar Company has more than double the page views and redirects as Autocar Magazine.Sedimentary (talk) 22:08, 24 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

It's a big leap to change primary topics. I'd suggest moving Autocar (disambiguation) to Autocar, to force disambiguation. A lot of links intended for the magazine will need disambiguation to Autocar (magazine). – wbm1058 (talk) 23:58, 24 August 2017 (UTC)Reply
You have a good point: page view stats – It may just be because the article about the magazine was started first, so it had the first-mover advantage. wbm1058 (talk) 00:07, 25 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

– per the discussion above, the American truck manufacturer has significantly more page views than the British magazine, thus the magazine is clearly not the primary topic. Both have long-term significance, having been founded within two years of each other in the 1890s. – wbm1058 (talk) 01:45, 25 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

  • Support as so often none of the items on the dab page passes WP:PRIMARYTOPIC. In ictu oculi (talk) 07:59, 25 August 2017 (UTC)Reply
The Indiana-based manufacturer is clearly the primary topic in the United States, but in the UK the magazine may be primary. Wikipedia needs to take a worldwide view, as it has readers in all English-speaking countries around the world. – wbm1058 (talk) 14:39, 25 August 2017 (UTC)Reply
  • Support. This UK editor was familiar with the magazine and vaguely aware of the railcar but had never heard of the truck company. On a global view, I'd judge that there's no PT and a dab at the base name is appropriate. Certes (talk) 19:28, 31 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

Move discussion in progress edit

There is a move discussion in progress on Talk:Autocar which affects this page. Please participate on that page and not in this talk page section. Thank you. —RMCD bot 04:46, 1 September 2017 (UTC)Reply

I think that's a false alarm caused by outdated links.
To inform any future discussions: this move resulted in 599 incorrect links to the disambiguation page. They're now fixed; all but about 10 were intended for the UK magazine. Certes (talk) 11:47, 1 September 2017 (UTC)Reply
Yes, an "edit conflict" of a sort with the bot. Can be avoided by closing the discussion first, before moving the page. The bot edit happened two minutes after the page was moved, and one minute before the discussion was closed. Also can be avoided by "moving on the fives" at five minutes after the hour (0:05) or 0:20, 0:35 or 0:50, which would be just after scheduled bot updates completed. Not sure if I can make the bot smarter so that this is avoided, but that might be possible. Thanks for helping with the post-move cleanup. – wbm1058 (talk) 18:12, 1 September 2017 (UTC)Reply
