Regraded edit

This article is just a list of schools and superintendents and a tiny bit of other information. Though the lists are quite long, this article is still no better than a stub. The Jacobin (talk) 15:03, 18 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

Moving Mill Elementary School information here edit

I'm moving a big block of text about Mills Elementary School from the article to this page. The text imparts no particular understanding of AISD (the topic of this article) and is jarringly out of place in this article. This information could go into an article about Mills Elementary School, if that school were judged to be notable enough to merit its own article; otherwise, it probably belongs in some sort of survey article along the lines of "Austin-area elementary schools" with corresponding summary entries for other similar schools (or else nowhere). For now, the content is moved below:

More information about Mills Elementary School
Pre-kindergarten through 5th grade. There were 1,099 students in 2008.[1] The school is named after a former principal of Galindo Elementary.[2] Mills community service includes support of the St. Jude Children's Hospital via jump-a-thon, and to residents in the community who have had a disease or any other life-changing problems.
Mills has a variety of after-school programs in which the students are able to enroll. Mills Elementary has its own after school daycare called MASCOT.[3] Mills also has a chess club, a math pentathlon team, 4th and 5th grade choirs, music memory team, and Lego Mindstorms club. Most of these activities last from the end of school to 3:45 in the afternoon.[4][5]
Mills has a number of school traditions. Prominent ones include the raising of the flag on the first day of school and the lowering of the flag on the last day of school, following 5th grade graduation and the end of the year slideshow. The last day of school flag lowering includes staff and students, and many parents and community members, and The Chicken Dance. This tradition has been shown on local news stations and in the Austin American Statesman. Other traditions include Cultural Arts day and Science Day - which typically alternate each year - Track and Field Days, Dr. Seuss character parade, Family Fun nights, Math nights, 5th grade Monster Mash, along with many others throughout the academic year.[6]
Mills PTA sponsors events throughout the year that incorporate the faculty, staff and students, including an annual Spring Festival, the well-attended community event Holidays Around the World, the Mills' Amazing Race, and a variety of other events intended to provide academic and cultural enrichment to the students, teachers and staff.[7][8][9]

Room for Improvement edit

Although this article does provide an extensive and current list of the schools within this district and the Superintendents, it does not give much history or depth about the organization and the daily duties it performs. A significant and historical event that could be touched on is the de-segregation of schools in the 1950s and 1960s which is pertinent to the state of the educational landscape in Austin. One could also attend a school district meeting and observe the activities there for some background on the duties of the Superintendent and the other workers at the school district. School Closures edit

The current version of the page includes some non-neutral wording , specifically the word "remarkable" being used to describe a testimony. There seems to be some disagreements regarding the last few sentences of the first paragraph (here, here, and here). For now, I'm going to remove the bias in the description of the board meeting.

I think that public controversy over closings of schools should definitely be included in this article. However, I think it would be better suited to Demographics or a new section. If there are no objections, I'll move this to Demographics. Thanks! Ombra serena (talk) 10:55, 17 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

Moving HQ delays in the 1990s? edit

From this letter to a columnist from a writer known as "Taxpayer":

I'd like to find an actual article from a Statesman staff which confirms this... WhisperToMe (talk) 04:34, 22 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
