Is a citation absolutely necessary? I lived around the corner from Alan Kennedy for years; went running with him, played tennis with him and bumped into him in the local shop almost every Sunday. Seems like we're missing out on kosher knowledge simply because it hasn't been referenced somewhere (that may also be unreliable). Shauny 13:05, 1 July 2010 (GMT)

Argleton

I propose introducing a section relating to Argleton as this appears to be one of the few subjects that has made Aughton newsworthy. Admittedly it would be better to include it in an existing section but I am unable to see where it might fit in so therefore suggest a new section. Any objections? Google Earth invents a town

Google Earth seems to think that England does not have enough towns and has decided to put one of its own in.

According to the Telegraph, people have been wondering what Google was on about when it identified a place called Argleton in Lancashire. It appears on Google Maps and online directories but is about as real as the mythical MooMoo bird which eats the negative thoughts of insects and weaves nests in the shape of Norway.

The “town” appears on Google Maps in the middle of fields close to the M58 motorway, just south of Ormskirk and thanks to the wonders of computer technology even has its own postcode.

[Where on Earth?] If you do an internet search for the town you can get adverts home, job and dating listings for people and places "in Argleton", as well as websites which help people find its nearest chiropractor and even plan jogging or hiking routes through it.

Google is not sure how the town entered its data base. The Telegraph suggests that it is an anagram of “Not Real G”, and “Not Large”.

Roy Bayfield, head of corporate marketing at what would be Argleton's closest university, Edge Hill, in Ormskirk, was so intrigued by the mystery that he walked to the where the internet indicated was the centre of Argleton to check that there was definitely nothing there.

I added a basic list but it was reverted by TerriersFan. The articles for both Ormskirk and Maghull both have links in External Links to various local churches, and the reference to Aughton.net seems to be a good candidate for an external link under WP:EL. I explained that Aughton.net has copyright issues and we can't promote a site that copies content from other websites. We also don't know its reliability - who published it? The fact that other locality articles have inappropriate external links is not relevant (and I have removed the ones you have identified); all sorts of stuff get added to locality pages but they are not a precedent. If we add churches; why not schools? Why not the Aughton Institute? We are not a directory of links. TerriersFan (talk) 17:39, 4 August 2011 (UTC)
