Musical artist, not actor?

Is there a reason this article should use {{Infobox musical artist}} and not {{Infobox actor}}? Her credits suggest she's more notable as an actress than a singer/musician. —C.Fred (talk) 04:58, 27 April 2010 (UTC)

Allstarpics.net?

Is there anything about http://www.allstarpics.net/pic-gallery/ariana-grande-pics.htm that makes it a reliable source? I don't see any evidence of an editorial policy sufficient to meet the reliability standard. —C.Fred (talk) 03:45, 22 June 2010 (UTC)

assertions of notable singer status

Hi - please present here reliable support that this person is a notable singer, thanks. Has she released a song or an album? Off2riorob (talk) 22:15, 24 July 2011 (UTC)

Yes, she's just released her first single, and she has been on the musical tv show Victorious for a while, and has songs on that soundtrack. Her album is coming out in March, I believe, not absolutely sure on that. Do you want me to provide you with reliable sources? It's a known fact, her first single is entitled "Put Your Hearts Up".. --TaylorLanebore me 18:55, 16 January 2012 (UTC)

Are her hypoglycemia and shellfish allergry really notable? Why on earth would anyone care about these two trivial tidbits? 110.174.233.75 (talk) 12:24, 18 December 2011 (UTC)

I don't think the shellfish allergy is notable at all. The hypoglycemia could be, if she's done any public outreach about the condition. In the absence of that, I agree that the information is awfully trivial, and I'm boldly removing both. —C.Fred (talk) 13:38, 18 December 2011 (UTC)

It's also more directly in her Twitter profile, at http://twitter.com/#!/ArianaGrande/media/slideshow?url=http%3A%2F%2Ftwitpic.com%2F8fcs90. The Twitter account is verified. Do we need to render that as her full/birth name? —C.Fred (talk) 19:35, 26 February 2012 (UTC)

The intresting thing about her surname is that is originates from the Greek word for butter: The word butter derives (via Germanic languages) from the Latin butyrum,[2] which is the latinisation of the Greek βούτυρον (bouturon).[3][4] This may have been a construction meaning "cow-cheese", from βοῦς (bous), "ox, cow"[5] + τυρός (turos), "cheese",[6] but perhaps this is a false etymology of a Scythian word.[7] Nevertheless, the earliest attested form of the second stem, turos ("cheese"), is the Mycenaean Greek tu-ro, written in Linear B syllabic script.[8] The root word persists in the name butyric acid, a compound found in rancid butter and dairy products such as Parmesan cheese. And her first name Ariana has similarities to the ancient Greek name Andreas/Andriana. Andriana meaning and name origin

Andriana \a-ndria-

na, an(d)-riana\ as a girl's name is a variant of Andrea (Greek), and the meaning of Andriana is "manly, virile". The baby name Andriana sounds like Andrina, Andrianna and Andreana. Other similar baby names are Adriana and Audriana. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 144.137.165.61 (talk) 06:23, 25 May 2013 (UTC)

Change the date of Put Your Hearts Up in the Singles section to 2012 (instead of 2011) because 2012 is when it was actually released as a single.

Change the spelling of "Gimmie Some Lovin" in the Covers section to "Gimme Some Lovin" because that is the proper spelling according to the article on the original version of the song.

Add "Sweet Life," originally by Frank Ocean, to the Covers section because she's covered that song before.

Also add "Only Girl (in the World)," originally by Rihanna, to the Covers section because she has covered that song before.

Change the spelling of "Beiber" to "Bieber" in the Covers section because "Beiber" is a misspelling. Skyesweetnam4ever (talk) 04:35, 25 March 2013 (UTC)

Sources & narrative

  • Although Twitter is not excluded from the list of reliable sources that can be used in a biography of a living person, an article should NOT be built on information from the source so replacing the majority of that material is preferable.
  • When a person has moved away from a town prior to having graduated from high school (such as with Grande), saying they were born & raised there can be misleading.
  • The format of this biography doesn't suit the sources - there isn't reliable source information on: Grande's vocal range, the award for her work on Broadway, her involvement with the South African charity, readings at other shows. Grande's Twitter is NOT enough source for these points since each could be challenged.
  • Since an article can always grow, biographies of living people are best written to the actual RS material available in the moment instead of padded out with possible data.

Issues and edit requests

Why is this article locked? Why not flagged edits? The section above "Semi protected" does not make it clear why the article is locked.

Edit requests 1: The personal life section says "confirmed on twitter" (sic). This happens all the time but there is absolutely no need to pedantically write out that she said it on Twitter (also should have been capitlized) it is not any more special than any other source. (Even with a Twitter junkie like Ashton Kutcher it is more than enough to say "announced" and then to provide a reference/citation with the link.)

Edit requests 2: Overcomplicated phrasing "Victorious's current season (Season 3, which was split to a fourth season) will be the last." could be significantly shortened and simplified to say something like ~ the show Victorious will be ending ... and Grande would return in a new show Sam & Cat. (Again, there is no need to spell out that it was announced on a particular press tour, so long as that information is included in the references.) The relevant information is old show ending, new spin-off starting.

I'd have done these edits myself if the article was set to allow flagged edits. -- 93.107.207.225 (talk) 13:26, 23 October 2013 (UTC)

Okay, I've made some edits. Now, if you would hover over the lock or look at the history page you'd see that the reason for protection is because of vandalism. Though, I'm not sure why it's for a whole year. You could talk to the admin who did it. But, you know, if you just registered, it wouldn't matter that it was locked. --Musdan77 (talk) 06:10, 24 October 2013 (UTC)
Way too much abuse of editing privilege by anon IP users, due to additions of unsourced content and general BLP vandalism. If you are wondering why it is protected for a whole year, just see this. STATic message me! 06:17, 24 October 2013 (UTC)

Thanks, those edits improve things. Thanks for the information about the lock, that is still pretty vague though, so I'm glad you gave the extra example.

I've issues with the ways Wikipedia works, or more to the point fails to work. I know it seems like 'just register' is an answer, but WIkipedia claims to be open (at least it used to) and Jimmy Wales claims to want more people to participate. Similarly flagged edits strike a better balance than locking articles and encourage wider participation and curtailing the most obvious vandalism. (but there are a whole lot of edits that do not show much WP:GOODFAITH and fail to even follow the most basic and WP:SIMPLE rules and at least make the effort to provide an edit summary.) -- 147.252.95.55 (talk) 15:55, 25 October 2013 (UTC)

Since you obviously want to helpfully contribute I think the best thing to do would be to register, it comes with alot of perks and requires basically no personal information. This page used to have pending changes, but unsurprisingly too many people took that for granted and the page continued to be vandalized daily. Eventually it becomes too tedious for the reviewers, and semi-protection becomes the better option. STATic message me! 17:57, 25 October 2013 (UTC)

Registering only plays into the reputation game instead of forcing editors to think, and to follow the fair but WP:SIMPLE rules and to make more effort, to allow flagged edits and take the time to review, rather than blocking editors. I've been on both sides. I stay outside because Wikipedia needs to improve but has not failed or been replaced yet. -- 109.79.98.70 (talk) 01:31, 23 November 2013 (UTC)

Edit request on 31 October 2013

<-- change the main picture of Ariana Grande to an up to date picture -->

Emilysipple (talk) 22:46, 31 October 2013 (UTC)

Not done: You'll need to be specific about which picture you want to use, and it must be under a free license. It can't be just any picture found on the internet. —C.Fred (talk) 23:07, 31 October 2013 (UTC)

Ariana s cousin

Ariana has a cousin in ohio — Preceding unsigned comment added by Anna sharanevych (talkcontribs) 20:21, 9 November 2013 (UTC)

Extended family is outside the scope of the article, especially non-notable family members. —C.Fred (talk) 20:26, 9 November 2013 (UTC)

Correct use of commas

Under the Philanthropy section:

1. "co-founded the youth singing group, Kids Who Care" should read "co-founded the youth singing group Kids Who Care". 2. "as a member of the charitable organization, Broadway in South Africa" should read "as a member of the charitable organization Broadway in South Africa". 2602:30A:C0B3:B0C0:A1C9:538:EF78:3623 (talk) 05:31, 25 November 2013 (UTC)

Done. Thanks. In the first case, I've re-ordered the sentence to remove the dangler that made it read as if South Florida performed for charitable fund-raising events. --Stfg (talk) 10:20, 25 November 2013 (UTC)

Question/Edit request

I think this list should be also added to the "Discography" section:

Christmas Wishes (EP) (2013)
TBA (2014)[1]

--GleekRicky98a (talk) 07:24, 27 November 2013 (UTC)

References

I think the '14 release should be omitted until it has a title. The general guideline is that albums don't go on the discography until they have a title and a release date.
As for the EP, in many cases, discography lists within articles are kept to full albums only; EPs are excluded. In any case, we need a reliable source or two for the EP before it can be included anywhere in the article (discography section or prose), especially since there seems to be some dispute over the title (Christmas Wishes v. Christmas Kisses). —C.Fred (talk) 13:52, 27 November 2013 (UTC)

New Pictures

I think this wikipedia article for Ariana Grande should have more recent pictures. These pictures on here were from a few years and should be updated. They should be changed to some of these: http://cdn.thatgrapejuice.net/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/ariana-grande-vma.png — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kkelseyeelizabeth96 (talkcontribs) 04:20, 15 December 2013‎ (UTC)

Not done: Images in biographies can only be free images. That Grape Juice does not provide attribution for their images, so there's no way to determine who holds rights to the image and whether we can use them. On the off chance that That Grape Juice held the rights, we can't use the image, because they have an all-rights-reserved license on their content. —C.Fred (talk) 22:44, 15 December 2013 (UTC)

Update 12/15/2013 billboard social 50

Ariana Grande, as of 3:26 12/15/13, is number two in the Billboard social 50. This should be updated, on her wikipedia page it says she is at number 3. Cite error: There are <ref> tags on this page without content in them (see the help page). http://www.billboard.com/charts/social-50 — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kkelseyeelizabeth96 (talkcontribs) 20:29, 15 December 2013 (UTC)

Done Updated to show her at #2. Wording will need tweaked at such time as she falls in the rankings to note she peaked at #2 (unless she makes it to #1). —C.Fred (talk) 22:53, 15 December 2013 (UTC)

New Pictures needed

I'm sorry to say this again but new and updated pictures are needed on this site for her, those pictures are very old and outdated. I do not know exactly what sites are the "free-licensed" ones or whatever but they should be updated for relevance. There is a picture of her in 2010 in the section about her album that came out in September 2013 that should not be there. The main picture of her is also from 2011, it is almost 2014, first of all the picture is outdated and her hair has not been red for a while now. I hope someone can find better pictures soon please, thank you. Kkelseyeelizabeth96 (talk) 20:48, 15 December 2013 (UTC)

I agree that the pictures are starting to get out of date. However, part of the reason we're using old images is that nobody has found suitable (that is, freely-licensed) images that are more recent. —C.Fred (talk) 22:45, 15 December 2013 (UTC)
