The earliest newspaper entry I could find for the game appears in "A Jolly Game", Belper News (2 Dec 1910), although it differs from the version described in the Wiki article. It only has 2 players and the first to strike their opponent's head 12 times wins. All earlier references (from 1880 onwards) are to the folk song "Are you there, Moriarty?".
