The rem-jet backing for movie films is needed, besides antihalation, to allow for daylight loading of movie cameras. Kodachrome was commonly used in double-8mm (before Super-8) cameras, which also daylight load open reels of film. Most 35mm films, I believe the IR films being an exception, have a gray base to reduce light piping when loading, but also for antihalation. Most (paper backed) roll films don't have a gray base.
