Somewhat unfair edit

This article is somewhat unfair in it's assessment of Cole's relationship with United fans, who have certainly taken him to their hearts after he began scoring heavily. It is also slightly misguided and seems to suggest he was a peripheral figure in the 98-99 treble season, when in fact he was a first choice striker alongside Dwight Yorke in an often mesmeric partnership. He was also prolific in 97-98 campaign; although the article does acknowledge this (albeit perhaps not satisfactorily), it still seems to point to him as a figure of ridicule throughout this season, when in fact he was a shining light.

As I remember it, it wasn't really until the 98/99 season that United fans finally warmed to Andy Cole. Although his goalscoring record before then was good, he had a knack of missing easy chances and this infuriated the fans. So this negativity from United supporters is worth keeping in the article I feel.
I've added a sentence on his partnership with Dwight Yorke in the 98/99 season as this wasn't even mentioned before. I also felt his 5 goals against Ipswich in 1995 was worth mentioning too. However, I still feel this article lacks detail. Cole is the second highest goalscorer in Premiership history and I don't think this article does him justice at all.82.1.232.222 12:58, 1 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

I've expanded his Manchester United section a little by highlighting a number of important goals he scored for the club, such as his goal which won United their Premiership title in the Treble season, and removed the comment about Teddy Sheringham being the star of United's 00/01 season as I don't think it is relevant to Cole. Also pointed out he scored the winning goal for Blackburn in the League Cup final against Spurs. - 8 January 2007

Andy or Andrew? edit

When at Newcastle and Manchester United he was known by everyone as Andy Cole but a few years ago said he prefers to be known as Andrew Cole. Seeing as he's most well known as Andy should that be the article title? Probably should mention the naming issue in the article too.

yeah. I was just about to comment on that. I think it should be Andy since he is well known as that but mentioned in the article that he prefers andrew--213.7.48.114 18:52, 3 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

In the February 2010 issue of FourFourTwo magazine he gives an interview where he responds to a question about his name change by saying he didn't ask for his name to be changed to Andrew, but did acknowledge it as his proper name. He stated that Andy or Andrew is fine. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Mbjuson (talkcontribs) 02:00, 26 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

He spoke on an MUTV documentary to clear this up. He was asked by a journo what his mother calls him. He responded Andrew. They then invented the line that he insisted on being called Andrew. From his mouth he says it's complete nonsense, so really should be taken more seriously that tabloid garbage. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 90.217.252.33 (talk) 02:31, 17 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

Outstanding edit

Why is there no mention of Cole's foray into the world of popular music with the uncharting single 'Outstanding'?

Vandalism edit

Someones has vandalised this site changing his name to Gavin Berwick and changing the date of birth considering it says that 32 year old Andrew Cole was born in 1989! changed most of it but don't know exact details!

dealt with. --barneca (talk) 12:00, 15 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

High score edit

Is it fair to call him "one of the highest scoring players in English football's history"? Compared to the likes of Arthur Rowley (433) and Jimmy Greaves (357), his record isn't that special. Premiership history, maybe? —Preceding unsigned comment added by AuntFlo (talkcontribs) 00:30, 28 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Charity/Community Shield edit

Given the reference to his substitute appearance for Arsenal in the 1991 Charity Shield (Community Shield), why isn't A Cole credited with for that in the honours section (Arsenal and Tottenham shared the trophy after a 1-1 draw)? Is there some rule that I am unfamiliar with that prevents this? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.202.75.14 (talk) 16:48, 27 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Personal life edit

Surely Andrew's personal life merits a section here? Macphysto (talk) 19:12, 11 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

If you have any information about Cole's personal life, please add it. – PeeJay 11:07, 12 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Andrew 'Andy' Cole edit

The practice on Wikipedia is to use the most commonly used style for page titles. Despite his best efforts, that is Andy and not Andrew Cole. For example, in the Huddersfield paper, though Andrew is used in the body, Andy is the use in the heading; This when he joined MK Dons; This when he left Forest; The BBC's usage, etc. I would add that from his Soccer AM interview it is unclear he asked for this name change. I think the page should be moved. TerriersFan (talk) 21:40, 7 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

I think, perhaps, that we should open this up to a formalised RM discussion. – PeeJay 21:57, 7 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

40 Premier League Games??? edit

Was just having a quick look through Cole's goal scoring records and according to this article, Cole scored 34 premier league goals in 40 premier league games. The 34 goals part is accurate, but I have my doubts about the 40 games part of it. There are 20 teams in the EPL, always have been. For 40 games to have been played, Newcastle would have had to have played every team twice (which is what happens) and then played themselves twice (which doesn't happen). Unless I am missing something (in which case please notify me), I will change the tally to 38 sometime this week. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 220.244.56.46 (talk) 10:49, 20 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

The Premier League had 22 teams for the first 3 seasons, went down to 20 for the 1995–96 season. I'll revert you. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 11:07, 20 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Lead paragraph edit

I really don't think the lead paragraph of this article should concentrate so heavily on the silly issue of his name. Surely that can be addressed further into the article. The lead paragraph should give a summary of the important aspects of his life/career, not focus entirely on his first name. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 88.151.27.237 (talk) 18:10, 5 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Just Andy edit

Come on, guys. He has made it clear that the whole Andrew thing was press nonsense. Mentioning it in the first line is even worse. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2.220.183.213 (talk) 08:51, 12 July 2015 (UTC)Reply
