Close paraphrasing edit

This article began with too much content and structure copied from [1] and remains derivative of that source. For an example of close paraphrasing, consider the following:

Serving at many of the top track and field meets in Southern California, Bakjian established himself as a leading official

The source says:

Serving at many of the top track and field meets in Southern California, Bakjian established himself as a leading official

The article says:

He chaired the national officials committee and headed the panel that selected the slate of officials for the 1984 Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles. He also served as chief referee of running events at the Games....

The source says (with additional material omitted):

He later chaired the national officials committee...headed the panel that selected the slate of officials for the Olympic Games in Los Angeles. He also served as chief referee of running events at the Games...

While facts are not copyrightable, creative elements of presentation - including both structure and language - are. So that it will not constitute a derivative work, this article should be revised. The essay Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing contains some suggestions for rewriting that may help avoid these issues. The article Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/2009-04-13/Dispatches, while about plagiarism rather than copyright concerns, also contains some suggestions for reusing material from sources that may be helpful, beginning under "Avoiding plagiarism". --Moonriddengirl (talk) 14:27, 18 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
