Entry descriptions edit

@Fyrael: Re: your edit reversion. I wonder why you would object to a description which other readers might need, even if you do not yourself? You are citing WP:MOSDAB, but that does not say what you claim. There are very few examples on that page with no description at all, and those are specific cases. It asks us to keep descriptions short, and I did so, adding descriptions which were briefer than those from the previous editor which you had reverted. I think they follow the examples in the MOS quite well. --Monxton (talk) 22:55, 7 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

The specific bit that I'm referring to from MOS:DAB is "Keep the description associated with a link to a minimum, just sufficient to allow the reader to find the correct link. In many cases, the title of the article alone will be sufficient and no additional description is necessary."(emphasis mine) I don't see why the titles here aren't already sufficient, considering a band is quite different from an album and I struggle to think of a context where the two would get confused. I feel like in general many editors have it in their heads that descriptions are required, or at least the default, when it's in fact the other way around. I do realize that I'm being pedantic on a DAB this small, where a reader can read the whole thing even with descriptions pretty quickly, and if you feel strongly about it I can just give way, but I do feel like I'm correctly representing what the guideline says. -- Fyrael (talk) 23:09, 7 December 2020 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. I do see your point, though I think that wording does not match the MOS:DAB examples, which have a description in a large majority of cases. May I just expand slightly on my argument? WP is not the world. So while WP may only have one article on a band called Altan, that does not mean it is the only band called Altan, or the only notable band called Altan, it just means that it's only band called Altan that has a WP article. So the reader who wants to read about that other notable band called Altan can see that this is the Irish traditional band and not the K-Pop band which doesn't yet have an article. (I think the Irish one actually is the only notable band called Altan in 2020, but hey, it's just an example.) This kind of unboundedness of proper names and organisational names is why it seems to me more helpful to have a minimal description than none at all. --Monxton (talk) 02:29, 9 December 2020 (UTC)Reply
