Requested move 27 April 2017 edit

Moved as proposed. Consistency in topic/subtopic titles is a legitimate basis for moving to more descriptive title scheme. Consensus is close, but is there. bd2412 T 03:42, 5 May 2017 (UTC)Reply

– Matching the disambiguation to the name of the transit system per Wikipedia:Naming conventions (US stations)#Disambiguation. The NJ Transit was moved over a year ago, and in the discussion it was determined that that's the common name, and I expect it's more WP:RECOGNIZABLE for readers than "NJT". • As the one who proposed the move of the article, I don't really have a problem with this. "NJT" is used, but would relatively unrecognizable to readers outside the region or the railfans community. The longer disambiguatir has advantage of being clearer. oknazevad (talk) 18:13, 27 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

Princeton (NJT station) → Princeton station (NJT) → Princeton station (NJ Transit) ...

Princeton Junction Station → Princeton Junction (NJT station) → Princeton Junction station ...

Union Station (New Haven) → Union Station (New Haven, Connecticut) → Union Station (New Haven) ...

Times Square-42nd Street (New York City Subway station) → 42nd Street-Times Square (New York City Subway station) → 42nd Street-Times Square (New York City Subway) → Times Square-42nd Street (New York City Subway) → Times Square–42nd Street (New York City Subway) → Times Square-42nd Street (New York City Subway) → Times Square–42nd Street (New York City Subway) → Times Square – 42nd Street (New York City Subway) → Times Square – 42nd Street / Port Authority Bus Terminal (New York City Subway) → Times Square–42nd Street/Port Authority Bus Terminal (New York City Subway) → Times Square–42nd Street/Port Authority Bus Terminal station ...

Don't editors have better things to do than endlessly re-titling articles about train stations that people have had no trouble identifying for years & years? If unstable "consensus" and "guidelines" repeatedly recommend renaming dozens of heavily linked articles whose titles are already quite clear from two seconds of reading, at some stage people need to consider whether all these minor cosmetic changes are more trouble than they're worth. —Patrug (talk) 06:00, 28 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

Some relevant quotes from WP:TITLE (emphasis added):

  • The goal of conciseness is to balance brevity with sufficient information to identify the topic to a person familiar with the subject area.
  • Debating controversial titles is often unproductive, and there are many other ways to help improve Wikipedia.
  • Nor does the use of a name in the title of one article require that all related articles use the same name in their titles.

And from Help:Introduction to the Manual of Style/4 (emphasis in original):

  • Stability. Don't change an article from one guideline-defined style to another without a very good reason.

Please consider... —Patrug (talk) 06:23, 28 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

  • @Patrug: Don't editors have better things to do than endlessly re-titling articles about train stations that people have had no trouble identifying for years & years? Yes, but circumstances change. When the original moves per WP:USSTATION were conducted, the article at NJ Transit was still at New Jersey Transit and everything was subtitled (NJT station). Since the main article has moved to "NJ Transit", so must the station articles. So are you opposing this requested move?
(BTW, the Times Square article was never moved to Times Square–42nd Street/Port Authority Bus Terminal station.) epicgenius (talk) 12:23, 28 April 2017 (UTC)Reply
Patrug, the article titles criteria ask us to find the most WP:RECOGNIZABLE title for readers and to be WP:CONSISTENT with related articles. "NJ Transit" is the name of the main article, and is clearer for readers than "NJT".--Cúchullain t/c 13:34, 28 April 2017 (UTC)Reply
  • I have no objection to these moves. Mackensen (talk) 11:41, 28 April 2017 (UTC)Reply
    • At least as far as the New Jersey Transit stations go, they're better than what we have now, and they should be applied to the other New Jersey Transit stations who's names were mutilated in the previous renaming rampage. ---------User:DanTD (talk) 15:09, 28 April 2017 (UTC)Reply
  • Support, although "New Jersey Transit" is a common name that would be even more recognizable on a worldwide basis. Station1 (talk) 19:45, 29 April 2017 (UTC)Reply
