military service?

MacKenzie was appointed midshipman September 29, 1855. Serving in USS Hartford on the China Station at the outbreak of the Civil War, he returned to the United States and joined Kineo, in which he served during Farragut's daring dash past Forts Jackson and St. Philip on the lower Mississippi to capture New Orleans in 1862. are you really sure? He serveed 8 years AFTER his own death? Curious! *g*. I think, if this is really about MacKenzie, this belongs to one of his sons.

Burial; written remains

It would be helpful to include where Mackenzie was buried if that is known. Many of the Slidells were buried at Trinity Church in NYC. Mackenzie may have been buried in Brooklyn's Greenwood Cemetery, which was new at the time of his death. What were the judgments of contemporaries at the time of his death? Was his death much noticed?

Also, given that he was a literary man and a figure of continuing controversy, any collections of his papers that survive might be noted at the end of the entry. S.Barsy (talk) 13:17, 16 March 2016 (UTC)

Early naval career; organization

Mackenzie went on a number of tours of duty prior to his obtaining command of the Somers. These might be included in the 'early naval career' section. He also took one or two long leaves from service, and it was during these periods that he developed a literary career. This pattern might be used to rearrange the parts of this entry into coherent and well-developed sections. Discussion of the Somers should be confined to the section marked Somers, I think. Removed obscure reference from lead

I removed the following from the lead:

"The incident was described at length in Vina Delmar's novel The Big Family."

Given that we don't have an article on this novel, and that the Somers Mutiny had all sorts of significant effects (such as directly leading to the founding of the Naval Academy), this information seems somewhat undue, especially for the lead.Just a Rube (talk) 15:54, 21 March 2018 (UTC)

Conflation of the Senior Mackenzie's military service with the younger Mackenzie's military service.

I could not help but notice several errors where military service events were attributed to the senior Mackenzie when they belong to the younger Mackenzie. I visited the Navy Department Library to confirm my suspicion and found the same errors there. After speaking with a Navy Librarian, it was determined that this often occurs when two Naval members bear the same name and are related. Just be aware that it is impossible for the senior Mackenzie to have performed a military service years after his death. 69.165.45.203 (talk) 16:34, 10 October 2022 (UTC)
