What is Akismet?

I mean - what type of spam filtering is Akismet? Could you call it distributed spamfiltering? I would like to see a definition in the article, if anyone knows the answer. --MGarde 15:07, 19 September 2007 (UTC)

Akismet uses a suite of heuristic techniques as well as filtering it to see if the message has attributes reported as spam by another user of the service. Arawn 22:46, 18 October 2007 (UTC)

The name

"documented example" link is fairly low quality

While it looks like the user making the report did make a good faith attempt to document his issues,

1. It looks to me like the comment settings were set to dump any comment containing a URL (not a feature of SK2 or Akismet to my knowledge)

2. The reply from the administrator stated that they were using Spam Karma 2, not Akismet, when his comments were blocked. (This may be disputed?)

Criticism

• Eleven years on, and it still needs criticism. How in the fuck can something "crowdsourced" automatically be good, reliable or not prone to tampering? What's wrong with adding the following information to the article (It was deleted by User:Matthew_Yeager)?

Service costs $50/month for business users and this price could be encreased up to $1000/month depending on pageviews/month number.

Mommy wasn't the reason

Quote: "The founder of Automattic, Matt Mullenweg decided to create Akismet so that his mother could blog in safety." -- this sounds painfully bogus, something that one would say when wants to do something to make money (nothing wrong with that) but wants to make it sound more altruistic. Further the article linked to to back up that statement mentions nothing about mommy but instead that revenue generation to support WordPress was indeed the motivation: "To make money, we decided to do web services. The first one of those that I wrote, after leaving CNET, was actually called “Akismet,” and it was a plugin for WordPress that you’d drop in and it would stop all spam from coming in."

General updates

Hi I’m Nick I work on the Akismet team and this page is so out of date I would like to update it. I'm going to do a quick update set of edits just to catch the article up. I would appreciate any help/comments as I make these.
