African descent doesn't make you an African

The normal understanding of the word "African descent" is that a large number of your ancestors 500 or less years ago were born in Africa, like in the case of African Americans. It is quite normal to call people of African descent members of the African diaspora. But calling an African American or Afro-German an "African" may be seen as a racist insult, effectively denying their right to be seen as an absolutely normal American or German citizen.

I see two solutions to the problem: Either we rename the article to "Black Finns" or "Afro-Finns" (better solution) or we remove all people from this article that don't match the defintion of "a close African background" given in note "a" to the lede. Rsk6400 (talk) 06:50, 23 April 2021 (UTC)

How about we rename it to "African diaspora in Finland" or "Afro-Finns and Africans in Finland"? Because wouldn't renaming it to "Black Finns/Afro-Finns" rule out all North African Arabic and Euro-Africans in Finland (and other Africans in Finland who don't consider themselves Black) from this article, and then we'd have to split this article into two articles? Another solution would be moving the whole notable people list to its own list article (e.g. "List of Afro-Finnish and African people in Finland"), make a good lede for that list, and leave a link to that list in this article's "see also" section. 190.103.177.28 (talk) 14:07, 23 April 2021 (UTC)

Google scholars shows that "African diaspora in Finland" is a term used in scholarly publications (here), so I think that's the best new name. --Rsk6400 (talk) 15:13, 26 April 2021 (UTC)

Statistics Finland not a good source?

Hello! So, I'm a bit unsure what this exactly means: "Better referencing is needed for such detailed updates, the references given lead to archived general population censuses". Is there something wrong using Statistics Finland (SF) as a source? Six out of seven of the "Demographics" section's subsections seem to already be based on SF. In my deleted edit, I had fixed all the broken SF links and updated the old 2019/2020 numbers to the newer numbers from 2021/2022. I also added the sourced sections "Regions" and "Employment", both based on SF. Were all those edits I made problematic or just some? Kris Heinigen (talk) 20:12, 20 June 2023 (UTC)

It is a good source, but the reference clearly needs to state what is being added to the article per WP:SYNTH. TylerBurden (talk) 10:05, 21 June 2023 (UTC)
