Please do not alter the current version of African Institute for Mathematical Sciences. It is the most accurate version available and any undue alterations would be tantamount to vandalism. Ambrose.chongo (talk) 07:56, 2 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Ambrose, it reads like an advertisement. Read up at WP:SOAP. It is also the only page you have edited on Wikipedia. Wizzy 08:20, 2 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
I am afraid that I shall have to strongly disagree with your conclusion. The article is encylopedia standard and need not be edited to the effect that you feel it should.

Ambrose.chongo (talk) 17:50, 3 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Please read Wikipedia:Ownership of articles. This is not 'your' page. Statements like only students of the highest calibre enrol for the program is very obviously subjective. Statements like It is the hope that once these skills have been assimilated by the students, the skills would then be applied by the students in any research based work is not encyclopedic. It is probably cut-n-pasted off the AIMS website, which is where it should be read, not on wikipedia. All the invited lecturers report that there were impressed by the work rate and ability displayed by the students - ditto. Your copy is riddled with statements like this. Wizzy 08:20, 4 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
You have erred in assuming that article is a copy and paste. You may view the web site yourself. I would encourage you to read other articles on academic institutes or schools such as AIMS. Your objections are captious and should really not be effected Ambrose.chongo (talk) 11:36, 4 March 2009 (UTC)ambrose.chongoReply
I checked False Bay College, George Whitefield College, Stellenbosch University, University of the Western Cape, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University. None of them list the courses, or the lecturers. None of them have peacock phrases like The ambience of the Institute is one that is truly remarkable., and The visitors include influential politicians, wealthy financiers and even Nobel winning laureates, to just name a couple. Wizzy 11:54, 4 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
It must be realised that whilst AIMS is an academic institute similar to the ones that you adumbrated, it is unconvential as there is no fixed syllabus and academic faculty. Readers must be made aware of this. Also, it is probably the only academic institute in the world in which the students and lecturers live and work in the same building. Readers must be made aware of the experience of living there. Also, AIMS has become world reknown in some academic circles and it is for that reason that high ranking officials usually visit AIMS. Readers must be made aware of this as well.—Preceding unsigned comment added by Ambrose.chongo (talkcontribs) 12:03, 4 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
Well, I am not the one reverting you. But I am just letting you know why the article will not survive in its present state. Wizzy 12:22, 4 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

The previous edits are a discredit to AIMS as they do not inform readers sufficiently about the nature and the genesis of AIMS. The fact that it is unconventional warrants that the article be as informative as possible. Ambrose.chongo (talk) 13:54, 6 March 2009 (UTC)ambrose.chongoReply

They are not a discredit. Where ? I have picked out specific things above that I think are wrong with the article, which you have not addressed. Please do the same. inform readers sufficiently about the nature and the genesis of AIMS - thats what the website is for. An Encyclopedia Brittanica article on Cambridge University doesn't list the lecturers and courses - that stuff changes all the time. It gives a general overview of areas covered. You have addressed some of the peacock phrases, but not many. This is not a website. Wizzy 14:15, 6 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

The purpose of the article to inform readers about the institute as far as possible whilst remaining within the set guideline of how articles should be written. It is my belief that you have not grasped the fact that AIMS is highly unconventional and an article on AIMS can't be written the same way as an article on Cambridge say. Ambrose.chongo (talk) 18:01, 6 March 2009 (UTC)ambrose.chongoReply

an article on AIMS can't be written the same way as an article on Cambridge - It can, and it should. And it will. Wizzy 09:57, 7 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

The list of subjects taught has been removed. I believe that the current form of the article should be universally satisfactory. Ambrose.chongo (talk) 14:43, 7 March 2009 (UTC)ambrose.chongoReply

cleanup edit

The institute also tries to ensure that the student populus is representative of the continent - There are plenty of nationalities that have never been represented. tries - means nothing in an encyclopedia. Religion - not a part of the selection criteria - and thus represents africa's mix. It is nothing to do with the institute. You might as well say most students are black, or 40% are francophone.

The ambience paragraph - says nothing useful. And .. there have been incidents.

Courses - cutting waffle and personal opinion. It is hoped - more personal opinion. Present English teacher has no mathematical background. Most students would enrol - nonsense. They go all over. Money - has no place in an encyclopedia. Wizzy 17:12, 7 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Wizzy, I think we have reached a common denominator as to how the AIMS article should read.

Ambrose.chongo (talk) 18:11, 7 March 2009 (UTC)ambrose.chongoReply

I am disappointed to see that you have implemented your captious revisions without any thought as to what you were doing. The article dated 7 March is the most respresentative article about the institute and should really not be editted in any way shape or form from now on. Your edits are inane and without justification.

Ambrose.chongo (talk) 16:06, 16 March 2009 (UTC)ambrose.chongoReply

and should really not be editted in any way shape or form from now on Ambrose, you know perfectly well how wikipedia works, and it is not like that. Wizzy 20:08, 30 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Ghana edit

Hello Fellow Wikipedian,

I have noticed a huge flaw. Despite the page is called "African institute for Mathematical Sciences". It was mostly focused on the oldest center (in South Africa), after more than 10 years the other centers have been producing a large number of graduates and research which should be ignored. Therefore, I have added the section on Ghana for which I am knowledgeable. Other people should fill about the center in Rwanda which is also popular.

I have a big issue which probably raised a flag of "unsourced material". The visit of well known experts as Carlo Rovelli to the AIMS-Ghana center have happened and documented on websites of low status, but happened. Should this information be erased (as it stands "citation needed") or can be left? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Minddeep (talkcontribs) 00:47, 5 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
