Era/Period edit

In what period/era are the stories set? I know they use a telegraph sometimes. Mr G (talk) 01:39, 30 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

From memory, they seemed to be set at around the same time they were written, with technology and the attitudes of the characters towards hunting and environmentalism changing accordingly. (They were also supposed to take place over the course of a year, which obviously causes some rather interesting continuity errors). Iapetus (talk) 13:00, 3 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

Racism/Decolonialism edit

I've added a section on "Criticism" to highlight that the language of the original books is now considered by some educators as problematic (personal experience: in the mid 1990s I was part of a schools library team in Scotland who decided the books should be withdrawn from primary school bookshelves). Willard Price racially stereotypes different characters that might not be acceptable for children to encounter today without support or explanation. This has been explored in an academic peer-reviewed article by Richard Phillips (referenced in the wikipedia article).
