Adolphus Lewis Heermann was the son of US naval officer Lewis Heermann (1779 – 1833). This is discussed in The AMEDD Historian, Army Medical Department Center of History and Heritage, Fort Sam Houston, Texas Number 15 Autumn 2016, pp. 13-15. ([1]). Quoting:

The Heermann family was no stranger to military service. Adolphus’ father, Lewis Heermann, was a career naval surgeon and served during the War of 1812.

An additional useful reference on Heermann's ornithological work and a bit about his activities in Texas (along with those of his brother Theodore):

Casto, S.D. Birds collected at San Antonio by A.L. Heermann. Bulletin of the Texas Ornithological Society, Volume 30, Number 1 (1997), pp. 2-10. (https://sora.unm.edu/node/132220)

More about the Heermann Ranch near Bexar Texas, which apparently has displays of photos of the Heermann family is at: https://farmandranch.omeka.net/items/show/1278

This information may be in the 2016 Cassinia article by Joel Weintraub, but I do not have access to it. Apologies for not adding this information to the article myself, but I am not up to doing any editing right now! --Cotinis (talk) 17:22, 30 December 2019 (UTC)Reply
