Talk:Academic grading in Australia

Article name and context edit

Grading is a term which is applied to a wide range of subjects - it refers to categorising individuals with others sharing similar qualities. As such it applies to wool (but is often termed wool classing), wheat, soil, sand, meat, gravel, and a wide range of other matters.

This article maybe needs to move to Educational grades in Australia or something similar? and in accordance with the manual of style, should be able to use the article name in the lead section. Garrie 01:03, 11 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

I agree; I added a merge tag to Grading in Australia and to GPA in Australia, pointing to Grades in Australia. Do you think it is still necessary to use the "Educational" prefix? I think just Grades is clear enough and simple, and in any case we can add a disambiguation note on top of the article :) Waldir talk 11:15, 2 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
Due to the comments of AB-me in Talk:GPA in Denmark, I'd change my proposed target to Academic grading in Australia. Waldir talk 13:39, 2 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
Pointed here, I'd say Academic grading in Australia or Educational Assesment in Australia. Too many things are grades for this to be one article. Also, I'd say that this article is in desperate need of section headings and transition paragraphs. Mbisanz 18:12, 2 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
I like Waldir's suggestion of Academic grading in Australia. Long time between comments ;).Garrie 21:47, 2 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
I find that a beautiful thing, Garrie. :) It gives us a sense that hope is never lost :D Waldir talk 22:33, 2 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
So...I'm gonna execute the move to Academic grading in Australia unless anyone objects. Mbisanz (talk) 09:00, 10 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Cleanup edit

I've added sections and wikitables to the article to make it a bit more readable, but it's still a bit of a mess. It needs editing for clarity (I'd work on this, but I don't really know enough about grading outside my own university to be able to), probably less numbers, and maybe fewer examples. --Nasica (talk) 01:44, 5 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Monash edit

I go to Monash and the grading system here (GPA) is additional to the normal grading system and as far as I know it hasn't even been implemented yet. The page does not mention at all that this is a GPA.

The normal system is for coursework units is as follows:

High Distinction(HD)80+ Distinction(D)70-79 Credit(C)60-69 Pass(P)50-59 Fail(N)Less than 50 Near Pass(NP)45-49

For Honours, the same system is used except that the names are changed to HI, HIIA, HIIB, HIII and N respectively.

[1]

I think that this system is much more common from my exposure to other grading systems than the one listen as 'normal'. I know that Melbourne Uni uses the Honours grading I mentioned above for coursework.--211.28.222.112 (talk) 13:56, 7 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Sydney Uni Grading edit

According to the Uni website last updated 18 March 2010 [2] The grading system seems to be the same as most unis and not extremely different like the article suggests. Unless there is any objection ill edit this. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 124.187.133.172 (talk) 12:28, 13 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Sydney Uni Grading Grad boundaries are wrong -

100 - 85% is a HD 75 - 84% is a D 65 - 74% is a Cr 50 - 64% is a Pass —Preceding unsigned comment added by 59.167.248.144 (talk) 03:33, 15 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Charles Darwin University edit

Hi,

I feel CDU grades should be included into this page as it is now ranked 13th in Australia in one, if the University ranking systems. http://www.timeshighereducation.co.uk/world-university-rankings/2011-2012/oceania.html

The ranking system is as follows: http://www.cdu.edu.au/lba/all/allsp/documents/HigherEducationAssessmentGrades_000.pdf

I would add it, but have no idea how.

Many Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 122.105.158.33 (talk) 08:35, 29 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Sydney And Queensland edit

  • While I admit that the current table is a little cluttered why exactly do Sydney and Queensland Uni's have a complete section on their grading as opposed to being in the table? There isn't enough information or difference to warrant this. Shadowmaster13 (talk) 11:01, 9 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
USyd has a somewhat novel scaled system which does need a bit of prose explanation, which is probably why it's down there. I've moved UQ's system into the main table. Adam Brenecki (talk) 02:33, 4 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
  • That whole Usyd section is totally out of date. We use standards-based assessment now: [3]. I suggest simply deleting that section. Usyd is already listed in the table above it. --99of9 (talk) 03:58, 4 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

USyd section removed edit

I removed the whole section titled "University of Sydney" from the article. As 99of9 mentioned, it is badly outdated. Here it is:

Extended content

In 2000, the university-wide academic board for The University of Sydney approved a policy of using Norm-referenced assessment for all faculties (although not all faculties use the official policy[1]). In Section 3.2 of the academic board assessment guidelines (Distribution of Grades), the percentages are stated as follows:[2]

Percentage grade distributions of passing students
%HD %D or HD %Cr, D or HD
First Year 3 14 42
Senior/Upper 4 18 50

This may be alternatively stated by percentile as follows:

Grade distributions by percentile of passing students
Grade First Year Senior/Upper
High Distinction (HD) 97–100% 96–100%
Distinction (D) 86–96% 82–95%
Credit (Cr) 58–85% 50–81%
Pass (P) 0-57% 0–49%
Fail (F) not scaled not scaled

Note, however, that Section 3.2.2 cautions that this distribution "may vary from unit of study to unit of study, and from year to year", and that "the proportions should apply [only] at highly aggregated levels".

Many courses also have Non-Graded Pass (NGP) and Non-Graded Fail (F), where it is considered more appropriate to have qualitative than quantitative assessment.

This, that and the other (talk) 11:28, 11 January 2016 (UTC)Reply
