Children

According to the film, Count Basie got tired of standing and sat down on the curb. A couple of kids sat down by him, gradually followed by others (one of whom took the hat back and forth from Basie). One of the kids in the left window kept yelling down at an older sibling at the curb. The second kid from the right (on the curb) is Taft Jordan, Jr., who was there with his father Taft Jordan. The photo crew figured out there was no way to get the kids out of the frame (they were having enough trouble directing the adults) so they just went with it. -- Gyrofrog (talk) 23:37, 15 July 2014 (UTC)

Article name

I believe that, strictly speaking, the title A Great Day in Harlem refers to the film about the photo (link). I'm not sure that the photograph itself had a name. That said, I'm not sure what else to call this article ("1958 Art Kane photograph"? "1958 Harlem photograph"? "1958 Esquire jazz photograph"?). Esquire, for its part, refers to the photo as "A Classic Esquire Photo of Four Decades of Jazz Musicians" (link). Their file name for the photo does include "Great Day" (link) but note that its use post-dates the film. -- Gyrofrog (talk) 17:05, 19 June 2014 (UTC)

Interesting question. I see no reference to the name before the release of the film (in Proquest). What gives a photo its title? If it's the original caption, then getting hold of the original magazine is needed. My guess is that it didn't have a name; regardless, the article's current title is probably the best one to help people find it. EddieHugh (talk) 16:01, 15 July 2014 (UTC)

I've dug a bit further. The (ostensible) Art Kane website simply calls it "Harlem 1958" (click on the "Harlem" link; no direct URL) as mentioned in this Jazz.com article. And I just noticed that the lede already mentions "Harlem 1958". (Here's another Artkane.com page, now archived.) We can (and should) keep the current title as a redirect, in any case. Nothing definitive there, although there is a sense of getting closer. Keeping the current title seems best (and adding "Harlem 1958" as a redirect if it doesn't clash with anything): see Wikipedia:Article titles#Use commonly recognizable names, "Wikipedia does not necessarily use the subject's "official" name as an article title; it prefers to use the name that is most frequently used to refer to the subject in English-language reliable sources". Not many people would know that the photo's from 1958, so would probably end up finding it via the article for the film. Leaving it as it is allows the photo to appear while searching (in some browsers, anyway). EddieHugh (talk) 19:26, 15 July 2014 (UTC)

I watched the film again tonight, as well as the DVD's bonus material (which is a real trove of information). One of the bonus segments, "The Copycat Photos," explains how during the time after the film's 1994 release, any number of photographs of similar gatherings used the "Great Day in..." theme ("A Great Day in Kansas City," "A Great Day in Hip Hop" etc.), to the extent that The New York Times referred to the original photo as "A Great Day in Harlem." All the more reason to leave this article where it is, I guess, though I believe the explanation ought to be incorporated. (I can think of a way to work it into the film's article, anyway, for example in a "Legacy" section.) -- Gyrofrog (talk) 00:56, 16 July 2014 (UTC)
