Copyright violation edit

I have removed three sections from this page due to a suspicion that they may be a copyright violation of http://www.abannerisunfurled.com/synopsisofeachvolume.html. Due to the standard procedure outlined at Wikipedia:Copyright violations, I have removed those sections, but left the other parts of the article intact. It appears that the "Authors" section, as well as the lead, is not a copyright violation. If the owner's permission can later be obtained, the content can be restored, but please do not restore it without permission from the owner or an explanation. Hello, Earwig. I'm a copyright historian and paralegal, and it seems clear to me that the quotes you refer to, about 8-10 lines per book, are completely protected under the Fair Use Doctrine. To really establish it as fair use, it would be good if someone added commentary on the short excerpts. We have as citizens in the US the right to make short quotes from copyrighted works, as long as we give credit. You don't need owner permission here. The real question here is whether the topic of this entry, books rarely read outside Mormondom and mainly read inside it for their inspirational value, merit encyclopedic attention. Wikipedia doesn't function well under fair use, given that all text is supposed to be contributed via a CC-BY-SA 3.0 License. We normally only allow fair use claims on an exception basis: see Wikipedia:Non-free content for more details. -- 208.81.184.4 (talk) 22:36, 3 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
  • Basically, Wikipedia tries not to include copyrighted text because the site's content is frequently republished elsewhere, sometimes for profit. This is different from most content elsewhere, where there is an implied copyright on the writer's text (not including the material taken from elsewhere, obviously) and it's not supposed to be published elsewhere.
