The ALCO 251 engine was a world engine. The North American listing of engines needs to be updated to include all export applications of the 251.--SSW9389 12:34, 19 May 2011 (UTC)

Revolutions per minute? edit

What's the rpm range of the Alco 251 engine? It sounds rather "slow". --84.119.77.74 (talk) 05:35, 30 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Aaron, 2 vs 4 stroke edit

Perhaps there is a misunderstanding about 2 stroke vs 4 stroke diesel engines. I went here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Diesel_engines and found no category for Four-stroke diesel engines.

“Its designation combines Alco's identifier for that bore and stroke - 2 - with the year its design was approved for laboratory testing - 1951.” seems pretty clear to me. Should the “- 2 -” be shown differently, colon, comma, or parentheses? The 244 and 251 have the same bore x stroke, so are both "2", even though they are different designs.

I.P. from March 2012: A four-stroke engine fires every other crankshaft revolution, so a 251 will have half as many power strokes as a two-stroke (EMD 567/645) with the same number of cylinders at the same speed. Alco’s run about 1000rpm vs EMD’s 900rpm, pretty close.
