Changing redirect

edit

I will be redirecting AEW to All Elite Wrestling from Airborne early warning and control. Per the page views, it is the primary topic. starship.paint (talk) 15:02, 27 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

An obscure sports organization whose hits are based on its newness, verses a long running use going back to the 1940s and literally dozens of books about the subject, versus what - a few news articles, most of which are nothing but press releases? The number of hits on wikipedia in a single very short period is no gauge of which is the main article. For all we know, this organization will probably be defunct within a year. Vastly more people are aware of the military term, than the number of people who are into pretend wrestling. - NiD.29 (talk) 20:27, 27 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
People may be aware of the term but they are not searching for it. Plus, the radar system’s article states its acroynm is AEW&C, not AEW. Its title also reflects “and control”. Even if the organization goes bust soon, if it’s more popular when it’s operating, then it should be the main topic at least until it goes bust. starship.paint (talk) 23:16, 27 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
The &C is a later (US) addition and does not take away from the core AEW use which is worldwide - however again, you are talking about a burst of media hype, and this is not a popularity contest. Just because your expertise is sports does not make it relevant outside that one niche, nor outside the US. How many BOOKS have been written about the wrestling? None? 02:50, 28 May 2019 (UTC)
  • Object. This is far too soon. It's not about popularity of the moment because something is new, it's about long-term interest and coverage in all reliable sources. The aeronautical use is historically way ahead and even if the wrestling noobs stay high it would be a long time before they could catch up. — Cheers, Steelpillow (Talk) 10:37, 28 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
I strongly agree. Like as not, the sporting group or association will go down into obscurity within a few weeks or months. Let them first show their durability. AEW is indeed a quite common term, the &C attachment was new to me. Jan olieslagers (talk) 15:56, 28 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hi all, including @Steelpillow: - you can weigh in at Wikipedia:Redirects_for_discussion/Log/2019 May 27#AEW. sorry Steelpillow. didn't notice you already weighed in. starship.paint (talk) 11:08, 28 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

Now that All Elite Wrestling has had a TV show for around a month, is this discussion worth coming back to again? Thanks.116.193.133.90 (talk) 10:51, 20 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

Typically these sort of conversations should not be addressed frequently. I would say to wait a minimum of 6 months from the previous close to readdress. The show has only had 3 episodes, give it a few months and see where things are then. - Galatz גאליץשיחה Talk 16:31, 23 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

Revisiting redirect

edit

Do you think it's worth reconsidering redirecting AEW to All Elite Wrestling and adding a disambiguation link to the top of the All Elite Wrestling page? The All Elite Wrestling page has amassed 144,127 page views in the last 30 days compared to 28,846 for airborne early warning and control. Joep1998 (talk) 16:38, 18 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

AEWAEW (disambiguation) – I think it's a ripe time to reconsider the issue of redirecting. It was perhaps a little premature to have a redirect in May 2019, before they had even produced a single match, but now they've carved out their niche as a solid second place (like Pepsi to Coke), we can reappraise things.

From recent clickstream data, about 97% of traffic to this page immediately clicks on the wrestling promotion. It's clearly what's on everyone's mind when they type "AEW" into the search bar.

Furthermore, monthly pageviews immediately jumped up by an order of magnitude in January 2019 (when they opened up shop) and have stayed around there ever since, with noticeable spikes in May 2019 (first event), August and September 2021 (CM Punk's debut in AEW/return to wrestling), and August this year (Wembley show); more granular analysis (see this year) shows the peaks in page views coincide almost exactly with PPV dates (March 6, May 29, June 26, August 27 and 28, September 4, October 2, and November 19).

Hence, it's pretty clear from the pageview and clickstream data that the primary topic is the wrestling promotion, and the the page at AEW should be a redirect with a disambiguation hatnote provided at All Elite Wrestling; even if it wasn't the primary topic by some metric, the principle of least astonishment should apply and lead to the same conclusion.
