Trainspotting

Some trivia stuff that was removed on 13:23, January 27, 2009 Mattbuck (talk | contribs) (5,782 bytes) (lots of things contain the A4, it's a major road. it is however not notable.):

"The A4 appeared in the 1996 film Trainspotting when the main characters (Renton and Sickboy) moved into a flat on the Talgarth Road (the stretch of the A4 between West Kensington and Hammersmith). The film contains a specific shot of the junction of Talgarth Road with North End Road."

Lots of stuff does indeed contain the A4. But to have a section of a big film based on it maybe makes this more notable. It's relevant as far as i can tell and adds to what is currently just a description of every turn along the road. If this article was just about the Great West Road, then there's probably no argument to its inclusion but i realise this is just a small part of the A4. So i'm adding this to the talk page to allow discussion. And at least then it's here for prosperity if any future wikier wants to incorporate it, or just wants some trivia. Use of "historic"

The A4 is not the historic route westwards from London. That was along Brentford High Street. The A4 is Brentford's bypass and the M4 is that's bypass--SilasW (talk) 13:02, 24 March 2010 (UTC)

Major work to be done on this page

This is one of the great London radial routes with a lot of history behind it and the destinations along its route. I think it is about time a British road aims to get Featured Article Status as currently the only roads to have achieved this are American. I am typing the first of several improvements, so lets open this up for discussion, peer review etc.Rimmer1993 (talk) 13:13, 4 April 2010 (UTC)

I have done a major re-write of the Route section. In doing this, I have used some of the existing material, but the other sections I believe need to be removed. The reason being that their information has also been included or it is irrelevant and superfluous. As always I welcome debate on what I have done and hope for others to contribute, especially some pictures.Rimmer1993 (talk) 18:42, 5 April 2010 (UTC)

After some thought on constructive suggestions about my major rewrite, I have again redone the research in a format similar to that done by other A road articles such as the A66. My original thinking was to make them like the American road articles that seem to get GA classification, but as pointed out the style doesn't quite match encyclopedic standards. I will also remove the two boxes for the time being to invite people to comment on whether the cleanup is better. Rimmer1993 (talk) 12:16, 18 July 2010 (UTC)

Error in info box at top right of article

In the info box at the top right side of the page it says that London is the western end of the A4 and Avonmouth is the east end while the article itself says that historically the road was the main route from London to the west of England. 71.14.72.230 (talk) 08:25, 11 January 2011 (UTC)

Junctions debate

There is a discussion at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Highways#Major junctions debate yet again that may affect the content of this article. 𝕁𝕄𝔽 (talk) 10:14, 22 November 2022 (UTC)

Please note that the major junctions in the infobox of this article has gone down from 32 to 12. Twelve is still quite a lot for an infobox, if you can, then please takeaway two (or more) roads to make it at least the maximum requirement of ten. If not, then I will do it in the new year. No, as it does not go through Wales. The artilce states it ends in Avonmouth in Bristol at the St Andrews Roundabout. It is the M4 that goes through Wales.Rimmer1993 (talk) 11:00, 2 January 2023 (UTC)

Transfer of responsibility for major roads to county councils

The assertion that responsibility for former turnpikes was transferred to county councils in 1878 is implausible given that county councils were not set up until 1888-89. Ntmr (talk) 21:17, 25 October 2023 (UTC)
