This story leaves a lot of room for interpretation. I'm wondering if that's the reason for the short article on it, but there's quite a bit of info and essays for this story to be found on the internet. I wouldn't want to add anything that may be interpreted as POV, but I suppose that's all that a story like this would come down to.

is sammy the hero or antihero, i am to believe that the real hero is mr. lengel for his duties he performed and saving the corruption of his store and stopping the young girls before this act becomes a regular one—The preceding unsigned comment was added by U (User contribs).

In this story sammy portrays the hero of a decade that hasn't realized what outlets they will vent through. Sammy quits his job, but is it really for the girls sake that he wants to be seen as a hero? I say that Sammy quits his job because he is fed up with the establishment and the social conventions of the time. I find that Sammy is a rebel without a cause, merely because he hasn't found his cause yet. He portrays an insight into a decade of rebelion against outdated social conventions yet to come.—The preceding unsigned comment was added by U (User contribs).

The summary had a a point wrong, I fixed it. The original stated that the hero looked around to see the girls leaving - In fact, the relevant line in the copy I've got before me is:"I look around for my girls, but they're gone, of course." - They had left earlier.—The preceding unsigned comment was added by U (User contribs).

THIS ARTICLE NEEDS TO BE TOUCHED UP!!! Ibut I'm not very experienced at writing Wikipedia articles, and am hardly the right person who knows enough about this subject to do it. It's just that this is an amazing piece; a piece that represents its time, and has a lot underneath the surface. I think that as long as multiple POVs of the story are represented, then there is no need to worry about POV.—The preceding unsigned comment was added by U (User contribs).

appraises them sexually in the manner of teenage boys

in the manner of teenage boys...what is that trying to say? that all teenage boys appraises sex? it seems like that the article assumes that any teenage boy would let those girls dress in revealing swim suits while in the store. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.106.224.138 (User ) 06:44, 3 October 2007 (UTC)

I agree, that adverbial phrase seems pretty clumsly, and non-specific. I think what's more relevant is the fact that Sammy is observing them sexually, and occasionally compares parts of their bodies to pieces of food. I guess there's not really a simple way to write that in the article, but overall the plot summary could be more clear, it reads more like a work of Updike himself then a concise summary of the story.

I'd like this article to stay around, and I'd be willing to help edit it, but does anyone have any suggestions on how else to improve this article?

Maybe adding analyses of the story from other writers? And cleaning up the plot in general, too. Hardtofindaname 06:00, 11 September 2009 (UTC)

Plot Summary

The plot summary reads like a high school essay, not an encyclopedic article. 12.199.54.126 (User ) 19:31, 26 January 2011 (UTC)

Stokesie

Says "Stokesie is a 22-year old black man who is married with two children," but in the text I have there isn't any mention made of Stokesie's race/color whatsoever. (75.181.20.88 (talk) 06:07, 29 January 2012 (UTC))
