Should there really be a separate article about this album?

Please review Wikipedia:Notability (albums)

• Albums that don't have an individual article should redirect to another relevant article, such as the artist or band in question.
• Albums should only have an individual article if there is enough verifiable material to warrant a reasonably detailed article.
• Even if an album is otherwise notable, there is no reason to indefinitely keep an article which can only list the names of the songs and who performed them.
• Remember that according to Wikipedia:Verifiability "If an article topic has no reputable, reliable, third-party sources, Wikipedia should not have an article on that topic".
• In particular, a band being notable enough to deserve an article does not mean that every individual recording deserves an article.
• Articles on different recordings should be merged into an established article unless the individual recording is a worthwhile subject of its own article.

Not being familiar with either the band or this album, I haven't a clue as to whether this particular album is notable or not. Whether or not that's true, this article does little more than list the songs on the album.—Nicer1 (talk • contribs) 22:44, 28 November 2006 (UTC)

• I removed the prod tag because it was added by an IP user who had done nothing other than add prod tags to a bunch of articles, which seemed a little suspicious to me, as this album seems to be at least minimally notable due to its chart position. Feel free to merge&redirect to Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machine if you want (it probably should stay as a redirect and not be deleted entirely, I think). Demiurge 22:54, 28 November 2006 (UTC)

I was the IP user, actually; there's a long story about all of this if you care to visit my talk page. I don't have enough information about this particular album (or the band, for that matter) to make any sort of judgment call on whether it is notable enough for a lengthy stand-alone article or not. If it is, that's not indicated by the current content of the article beyond its ranking on the chart; a lot of albums have gotten that high but I doubt we need articles on all of them.

Take a look at this as a possible way to capture the information on the albums. The Discography section heading in the main article would link to this article, and the album titles that have articles would be linked to those articles (see A World Without Dave and I Blame the Government).

The current articles that just have track listings (like this one) could then be deleted. Note that I've included the categories for the individual albums next to the album title.

This would also allow for the deletion of Category:Carter USM albums

If this seems good to you, feel free to move it to Carter USM Discography (to create an appropriate article).

The album satisfies the notability criteria because it "has appeared in the Top 20 of an album chart in a large or medium sized country". Given the band's popularity in their prime, there's no doubt in my mind that there's sufficient verifiable information to be found on the subject. There is a reason to indefinitely keep articles without much content; such articles are called stubs and are quite common throughout Wikipedia. Just because no one has come along and added substantial content yet doesn't mean the article should be deleted or redirected. Articles on notable albums that consist only of a track listing can be expanded later.

Subpages (e.g. Carter USM/Discography) are turned off in the article namespace. If a separate discography article is to be created, it should be located at Carter USM discography. The creation of a Carter USM discography article would not merit the deletion of Category:Carter USM albums; categories are for organizing existing articles for navigational and maintenance purposes. Thanks for pointing me to Category:Discographies. The Eminem and Eminem discography are a much better methodology to achieve what I was proposing. The discography is a separate article linked from the main article on the performer. Albums that have articles of their own are linked from the discography article. There are no articles on albums that only contain track lists. The track list is not included in the information in the Discography article; it is contained in the article on the album itself. Tracks that have their own articles are linked from the album article. A modification that might be desirable vis-a-vis the format used on the Eminem discography would be to include the album's track list in the discography article if the album doesn't have a separate article.

I also see that it is common practice to categorize the albums even when there is a discography available. I thought the discography would eliminate the need for the category.
