Team Association Flags

The flags for Swansea and Bradford have been removed as they are both members of the English F.A and play in the English football system and are treated as an English club based in Wales. This is reflected by UEFA giving Swansea an English Birth in the Europa League. The Inclusion of Israel in UEFA is a similar situation, they are geographically located in Asia but for all intents are a European football nation. The same scenario also apples to Berwick who are based in Northumberland, England but play in the Scottish Football system. Sport and politics (talk) 23:01, 27 February 2013 (UTC)

You can't just make assumptions about a situation based on unrelated situations. Cardiff, Swansea, Wrexham, Newport, Colwyn Bay and Merthyr Tydfil all play in the English leagues, but they are affiliated to the Football Association of Wales. This news article here contradicts your claim above and states Cardiff and Swansea are regulated "cross-border"

Being regulated on disciplinary matters is different to the clubs' affiliation. Obviously, if a team plays in a competition under the jurisdiction of the Football Association, they should be subject to the disciplinary systems of that competition. Even so, as I have shown, Swansea are affiliated to the FAW; I have noticed that Cardiff are not listed for some reason, but all of the other Wales-based clubs who are playing in England are, so explain that if you can. – PeeJay 17:07, 28 February 2013 (UTC)

Something cannot just be added because it is liked, it has to actually be justified for it to be added. This is a cup competition for teams in the English football league system, just as the Scottish League Cup is for teams in the Scottish football league system and the Swiss Cup if for teams in the Swiss league system and both of those also contain teams from outside Scotland and Switzerland, England and Lichtenstein respectively. The winning team also qualify for an English berth in the Europa League. This is not an international competition like the Super cup or Fifa Club World Cup this is a competition for teams in the English football league system and as such the flags are irrelevant. The flags are not used on previous years and the parameter specifically states "team association". The teams are not from two different association sanctioned systems, they are from the same association sanctioned league system. Adding the flags makes out as if this is an Anglo-Welsh competition played between teams in both the English and Welsh football league systems when it is just teams in the English football league system. The fact Swansea are geographically in Wales is adequately covered in the article. So the addition of the flags is confusing and needs removing. The flags are used on every occasion when a Wales-based team plays in the final of an English cup (see 1927 FA Cup Final and 2008 FA Cup Final); that should be status quo enough to keep the flags on this article. As I have stated above, Cardiff and Swansea are both affiliated to the FAW, not the FA, although they fall under the FA's disciplinary jurisdiction due to their participation in English competitions. You claim that the addition of flags is confusing, but to imply that Cardiff and Swansea are English clubs when they are clearly based in Wales is even more confusing. The flags allow those less in the know to identify the distinction, and reduce the confusion for those who are more in the know. Also, please stop making analogies to different countries - they are not relevant here, as each country deals with its own clubs on a separate basis. It is true that FC Vaduz plays in the Swiss league despite being based in Liechtenstein, but FC Vaduz also plays in the Liechtensteiner Cup, which is their only means of European qualification. Finally, you claim that Swansea are not a Welsh club, but only based in Wales; however, the BBC reference entitled "Uefa give Swansea and Cardiff European assurance" used in the article refers to Cardiff, Swansea, Wrexham, Newport, Colwyn Bay and Merthyr as Welsh clubs and specifically deals with the issue we are talking about; furthermore, it is more recent than the Guardian article you indicated above, suggesting a change in the situation. You have just shown two more articles the flags need removing from. There is no implication they are English in anyway only by placing an English flag under them would give off that impression. A very simple grasp of geography would show they are not located in England, but to claim this competition is Anglo-Welsh, by implying tat two different associations organised this competition and had teams participating is confusing. The other countries are explicitly relevant here, it is just inconvenient to the arguments being put forward to include the flags, as including the flags is not done. Where does the inclusion stop. Is there going to be a flag next to Swansea and Cardiff next to every entry they have in an English League table. Very nice that UEFA gave assurances over something which was never going to happen in the first place. UEFA were not going to ban the winners of the English League Cup/English FA Cup/English Premier League qualification from taking up the berth they had gained, simply because they were geographically based in Wales and not England. UEFA simply said which ever team wins gets the English berth in the appropriate European competition. Also please refrain from making personal comments directly towards other users. Actually, yes, they would have barred Cardiff and Swansea from competing in Europe had they qualified through English competitions. If Cardiff had won the 2008 FA Cup, they would not have played in the UEFA Cup in 2008-09. Again, you clearly don't know the situation here. – PeeJay 01:19, 1 March 2013 (UTC)

This is getting beyond silly now. Teams in domestic competitions are not representing any football association, they are merely representing themselves. There are no ramifications for any football association like there would be in international competitions. The flags are entirely unnecessary, distracting, non-PoV, add clutter and are contrary to the Flag MOS. Owain (talk) 13:58, 21 May 2013 (UTC)
