Talk:2011 Open Championship

Exactly what is this article about? edit

What sport?

Which country's "Open Championship" is it?

I happen to know, but the article doesn't actually tell us. In a global encyclopaedia, with readers from all backgrounds, this is appalling. HiLo48 (talk) 02:33, 18 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

No it is not, see 2011 Masters Tournament as an example, exactly the same format, I don't play golf, I don't live in either the US or UK and I am in no doubt. Mtking (edits) 02:47, 18 July 2011 (UTC)Reply
The "Open Championship" is the tournament's proper name. Strange Passerby (talkcont) 07:53, 18 July 2011 (UTC)Reply
Neither of those responses counters my point that the article doesn't tell us what country or sport it's talking about. It DOES matter. Aficionados may know. Clever readers may work it out, but we really should spell it out. I don't care what the official name is. Knowledge is knowledge. We should share it. I suspect you guys are probably just making excuses for the fact that you didn't notice the omissions yourselves. HiLo48 (talk) 08:17, 18 July 2011 (UTC)Reply
I think this is a very bad, exaggerated case of WP:IDONTLIKEIT. WP:Article titles is policy, and this page follows that in its naming. Strange Passerby (talkcont) 11:01, 18 July 2011 (UTC)Reply
My god you're smart! It's true. I don't like it. If I liked it, I wouldn't have bothered posting at all. That really is a dumb comment. You're a real genius! How about responding to the points I have made, rather than throwing unhelpful policies around? HiLo48 (talk) 11:46, 18 July 2011 (UTC)Reply
How about being more civil and accepting that your view is a minority view and that changing the article title to make you "like it" would be against policy? Strange Passerby (talkcont) 11:51, 18 July 2011 (UTC)Reply
How about responding to the points I have made? Yes, it's possible that mine is a minority view. Many times in my life I have been in a minority, and right. We don't vote here. We make it as good as it can possibly be by consensus. Right now, you won't like me, because I was rude. I was rude, because being polite was achieving nothing. I am actually more interested in making Wikipedia a better encyclopaedia than in caring what you think about me. Again, while the title may be fine, it's just stupid for the lead of an article about the major event in a sport in a particular country to mention neither the sport nor the country. Now, see if you can actually think about THAT, and politely respond to THAT. HiLo48 (talk) 20:42, 18 July 2011 (UTC)Reply
it's telling that in a year and a half nobody has actually responded to the points I made, apart from saying "but that's how we do it here" which, of course, isn't a response at all. The reason I'm posting again is that this is on my Watchlist, someone made a rare edit to the page, and, not recalling this earlier incomplete discussion, I again wondered "Which sport?" and "Where?"
