Due to the listed tie-breaking criteria, shouldn't Brazil and Puerto Rico BOTH be slotted as Group champions (A1 and B1 respectively) in the Quarterfinals standings? Niether Uruguay nor Canada can catch Puerto Rico for first, as they play each other today, and both had previously lost to Puerto Rico; and Dominican Republic lost to Brazil.Qazox (talk) 15:45, 30 August 2009 (UTC)

Puerto Rico can still finish second if Canada beats them today. Brazil has won the group, but it makes more sense to wait until after today's games before posting them into the quarterfinals; because only the games against the top 4 teams in the group carry over, we don't know what Brazil's record will be going into the quarterfinals. I was looking at the requirements for Canada to advance and I have a hard time comprehending why Canada needs to beat the Dominican Republic by more than 4 points considering that Canada has a 32 point advantage over DR when it comes to point differential and would normally break the tie just for winning the head to head matchup against the Dominicans. It's because the tiebreaker is not overall point differential, it is point differential between the tied teams. If Canada wins and Uruguay loses, then Canada moves through because head-to-head is the first tiebreaker. If Uruguay and Canada both win, though, it's a 3-way tie and tiebreaker is the point differential between the 3 teams. If, for example, Canada wins by 3, they will have +1 between the 3 teams (3 over DR, -2 against Uruguay), but the Dominican will have +3 (+6 against Uruguay, -3 against Canada), and therefore would advance. But this will come into play only if Uruguay wins to force a 3-way tie for fourth. Hope this helps. Bds69 (talk) 03:36, 4 September 2009 (UTC)bds69

A Uruguay win means Canada must win by four, and not as the page states "more than four." If Brazil loses 71-87 to Puerto Rico, and Argentina beats Uruguay 94-56, Brazil and Argentina would be exactly tied by all three critera, does anyone know how they break that tie?

I deleted my comments that semed to trouble you, perhaps you should apologize to howard for being an innocent bystander . And yes howard, I did use the overall goal average, that is criteria number three, I was interested in what happens would happen after that point. Does asinine include being able to use a calculator and some basic algebra?

Fourth brazilian title

The 2009 title was the fourth one to the brazilians. Brazil won the 1988 championship. FIBA archive, for some unknown reason, just changed the winner and runner up places on the final match. I've already sent various e-mails to FIBA-Americas to correct that and got no response. On the talk pages of the championship in both english and portuguese wikipedia links to various reliable sources as brazilian basketball federation, puerto rican basketball federation, El Nuevo Herald (biggest american spanic newspaper), The San Juan Star (biggest puerto rican newspaper) and argentine newspapers confirms that FIBA archive is wrong. I'll not rewrite or copy and paste it here. I'll just post here the links to the english and portuguese wikipedia articles talk pages.
