Flags

I've changed this a couple of times recently because I believe that the consensus was that we were using the manufacturers nationality to determine this and not where the teams are actually based - e.g. Ford is an American company so the USA flag is used - even though the team is actually run by M-Sport in Cumbria,England. Other examples would be Subaru (run in England by Prodrive but always recognised as a Japanese team), Toyota in F1 (run by TTE in Germany but again recognised as a Japanese team), BMW in F1 (recognised as German but the F1 team is based still in Switzerland using the old Sauber facilities!). If I am wrong that's fine but leave a message on the Wikipedia talk:WikiProject World Rally page so we can at least change the flags on the other WRC pages to make the articles consistent.Thanks --Younger2007 (talk) 10:40, 30 April 2008 (UTC)

But Ford isn't an American company, it's a multinational entity. Ford of Europe is an independent division within Ford that is based in the UK. They are the manufacturer represented, so it should be a UK flag. By your logic, the Jaguar F1 team should have been a US team since Jaguar is owned by Ford. Same for Mazda in the various series they have participated in. Also by your logic Williams F1 should be a Japanese team, and McLaren German. Talk:World Rally Championship has a discussion on the matter. There is confusion on the matter (although this webpage [1] suggests official manufacturer involvement) but that's no reason to change the flag on one article and ignore the convention followed on the majority of the other rally articles (e.g.2008 Swedish Rally)!

Btw, I don't see how my logic suggests that Williams is Japanese or that McLaren are German - Williams are a constructor in their own right, they simply have an engine agreement with a Japanese manufacturer, as McLaren has with Mercedes. The BP Ford World Rally Team is a official manufacturer team and Ford ultimately is an American company). --Younger2007 (talk) 19:49, 1 May 2008 (UTC)
