Please read this first

The second talk page has been archived on Tuesday Oct. 2, 2006 at 15:00 (8:00 UTC). Several aspects of the article have been discussed. In particular the importance of the protest and of the Internet censorship and the reaction of Thakin's supporters . If you would like to comment further on these issues, please read what has been discussed already and consider the consensus achieved before posting. Please also check the first archive that might already deal with your posting. Roger jg 08:10, 3 October 2006 (UTC)

Issues for Good Article review

  • The article is long (10,000 words) and very large (108 KB). Its size is dispproportionate to its length due to the massive number of references. Drastic efforts to cut down on article length should be made. As per wikipedia guidelines, I don't think the body of the article (not including intro) should exceed 6,000 words.
    • The chronology sections contain much information that is redundant to the sections that follow it. The chronology is neccesary and should be retained, but details of lesser importance that are covered elsewhere in the article should be removed, as should the verbatim text of the junta's announcements.
    • Some sections which should not be significantly cut down because as they stand, they contain information integral to the coup, including the "Thailand's deposed government" section, the "Restrictions on human rights and freedom of expression" section, the "Role and position of the King" section. That being said, some details of trivial importance can still be trimmed out of these sections.
  • Some details are inconsistent, including the current status of Defense Minister Thammarak (is he in hiding or detention?)
  • Several dead references (where there is a <ref name="XYZ" /> without a previous reference for "XYZ") should be cleaned up
  • All relative time references (e.g., "last Tuesday", "next Friday") should be cleaned up
  • Copyright status of all image should be checked
All picture labelled BKKxxxxxx are mine and freely available. Roger jg 13:10, 3 October 2006 (UTC)
  • We should make an effort to find english language references in cases where only a thai language reference is provided.
  • When we have some consensus about the major To Dos of the article, a {{todo}} box should be placed at the top of this Talk page.
We're inevitibly going to have some disagreements during the trimming down that will occur. That being said, lets all try keep our cool and be civil. Let's also try to make our edits in an incremental manner rather than restructing the entire article in one go. Let's also air out any disagreements and potentially contentious issues on the Talk page. Patiwat 18:06, 2 October 2006 (UTC)

The events, Thailand's political situation, and National reactions sections could probably be made into their own articles, i suppose. let me just say that i strongly disagree with deleting anything. I believe every piece of infomation can be saved, as long as we plan this out logically. dposse 00:11, 3 October 2006 (UTC)
I would be of the opinion to use the National Reactions as a subpage (for all the reactions) and sum up the current version to three short paragraphes for this page. I will try to do some further cleaning of what is in duplicate and on the timeline. References could be cleaned too because there are many duplicates but that's a huge task that should be done by one person only Roger jg 08:16, 3 October 2006 (UTC)

Sun Outage Pictures

I have two problems with this picture.

  1. copyright issue.
  2. the assertion that the sun outage is fake.

The first point can be resolved by looking at the Wiki policy. The second needs a support reference. In the meantime I have commented this pix pending further ref & Copyright info (the pix is not deleted, but commented in the page). My experience as a UBC subsrciber who do not have BBC or CNN is that there have been a few short TV cut showing this announcement during the last week on HBO. We need further information reagrding the verifiability of this info. Also why is it labelled 19 of may 2006 ? Roger jg 04:37, 4 October 2006 (UTC)

Remaining issues

Add as required:

  1. Was the 15 October election officially postponed? -> No referenced info, Patiwat suggests reverting to original.
  2. Red Links: Names need to be spelled as already recorded in Wiki. Huge Task! Any volunteer?

Roger jg 08:10, 3 October 2006 (UTC)

It is indeed a huge task. I don't envy anyone who wants to attempt it. dposse 17:03, 5 October 2006 (UTC)

Failed GA Nomination

I failed this article as a good article candidate because it is definitely not a stable article. One of the criteria for GA status is stability, and seeing as this article details a current event, it is by no means stable. Come back in a few months maybe. -- Cielomobile minor7♭5 02:20, 4 October 2006 (UTC)

As for the rest of the article, it looks to be of GA quality. Excellent referencing, high quality prose, and very thorough. My only misgiving is that it is too thorough. For an event which has taken place in such little time, it seems that it should have a little less detail. For example, I think some of the information in the "Civil servants, government agencies and family" section is unnecessary. However, this is only my opinion, and I'm not so sure of it myself. It is definitely a solid article; I'm very impressed, considering the short of amount of time between the event's actual occurrance and the creation of the article. Well done. -- Cielomobile minor7♭5 06:29, 4 October 2006 (UTC)

Too detailed? Isn't that a great thing? dposse 23:30, 5 October 2006 (UTC)

Length/Subpages

I've moved the economic consequences out to a subpage, this one is getting massive (12,000 words, 76kb of just text!) I didn't want to move some of the more likely controversial sections without discussion though. I also noticed that the summary for the International reactions section was getting big. As others have suggested, I think the 'domestic reactions' needs to be moved onto its own page, and maybe even a 'timeline' page be created. Iorek85 02:42, 7 October 2006 (UTC)

Mass protest?

Isn't there a better word than "mass protest" to describe the anti-coup protests?

I know that they're significant in that they defied martial law, but the participation of 20 or even 100 people or even 200 spectators can hardly qualify as a "mass protest" in the conventional sense of the word. Just google "mass protest" and most of the incidents will have figures running into the thousands or if less the protests are being carried out simultaneously in different locations.

The Paragon and Thammasat protests had neither element.Sakabatou 23:26, 10 October 2006 (UTC)

This issue was raised before and I agree with you that it looks silly to use "mass" in this case. I would simply say protest... Roger jg 13:26, 11 October 2006 (UTC)

I was thinking may be "high-profile protest" or just "public protest." What were the conclusions of the earlier discussion? Sakabatou 10:56, 12 October 2006 (UTC)

i'll go with public protest Roger jg 12:48, 12 October 2006 (UTC)

Okay, I've made the changes.Sakabatou 19:13, 12 October 2006 (UTC)

odd sentence

This is really just a tiny detail, but I found a sentence that seems a bit odd, and that I'm not 100% sure how to edit:

"Former Sakon Nakhon MP Chalermchai Ulankul a member of a faction allied with Suchart Tancharoen, a key TRT figure said he and others might be unemployed for about a year."

My immediate suggestion would be "Former Sakon Nakhon MP Chalermchai Ulankul, a member of a faction allied with Suchart Tancharoen and a key TRT figure said he and others might be unemployed for about a year." But I can't be certain that I've understood the sentence correctly, so I didn't want to make that edit without having it confirmed.

YouTube links

This article is one of thousands on Wikipedia that have a link to YouTube in it. Based on the External links policy, most of these should probably be removed. I'm putting this message here, on this talk page, to request the regular editors take a look at the link and make sure it doesn't violate policy. In short: 1. 99% of the time YouTube should not be used as a source. 2. We must not link to material that violates someones copyright. If you are not sure if the link on this article should be removed, feel free to ask me on my talk page and I'll review it personally. Thanks. ---J.S (t|c) 06:55, 7 November 2006 (UTC)

Could we improve the lead

I think the lead is poorly worded with many run-on sentences and extra words. It should introduce names of parties involved for example what exactly is the Junta. Perhaps it could also be updated to include the future outlook of the crisis.Mantion (talk) 06:09, 17 November 2007 (UTC)

Coup, not pronunciamiento

What occurred in 2006 was a coup, or more technically, a military rebellion. It was not a pronunciamiento. For one, look at any newspaper article about the coup in the months that followed it - in none of them was it called a pronunciamiento. Furthermore, in a pronunciamiento, the entire military overthrows the civilian government by official action. The Thai military was not united in the 2006 coup - witness the subsequent purge of many military factions in the coup's aftermath. Patiwat (talk) 16:11, 17 December 2007 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for Image:The nation 200506.jpg

Image:The nation 200506.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Long article

article is getting rather long. Isnt it high time to divide it? Lihaas (talk) 20:55, 15 August 2008 (UTC)

Aritcle appears to be biased

This article appears to be profoundly biased, as such things perhaps must be. One would expect mention of the fact that, constitutionally, Thailand had no government at the time of the coup--more than 90 days having passed since PM Thaksin dissolved parliament. Thaksin was ruling by edict. Of the fact that the elections that /were/ held were invalided by the constitutional court under Thaksin, partly because of another constitutional failure (the 20% rule for unopposed candidates) and partly for irregularities for which the members of the election commission were jailed (again, not under the Junta, Thaksin was still in power). One may also have expected mention of disappearances and the "war on drugs" in which thousands were killed in what seemed to be an orgy of political assassination; widespread internet and press censorship. Indeed it was forcing a TV program off the air that sparked the mass protests that preceded the coup.BKKevans (talk) 06:25, 20 September 2009 (UTC)BKKevans

Planning for the coup began in February 2006, well before the election-related issues you cite arose. I assume the election was invalidated so as to create a pretext for a coup. Kauffner (talk) 09:59, 14 May 2010 (UTC)
Your asumption just tells us about your bias. Do tell, how did the military plan the invalidation of the election caused by election fraud by TRT, including trying to bribe smaller parties to run in the election so they could bypass the 20% rule?

Internet Censorship : Tor (software) is blocked

There're efforts by people inside Thailand trying to overcome the current Internet censorship situation. One of the thing is by using Tor proxy software. Apparently, the official Tor website at http://tor.eff.org/ was soon blocked and cannot be accessed anymore.

see Talk:Tor (anonymity network)#Thailand.27s_ISPs_block_tor.eff.org_website

Could you indicate which site they are trying to access? : as of now, i was able to access the Tor site Roger jg 08:28, 10 October 2006 (UTC)

TOR isn't blocked anymore. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 58.8.155.52 (talk) 13:06, 9 January 2011 (UTC)
