USA squad edit

I removed Helmut Demucke because there is no legitimate source to verify this player even existed. Frank Wallace's original last name is Valicenti. Benjamin McLaughlin was selected to the final roster but did not travel with the team. Coaching staff included Walter Giesler from St. Louis and former president of the USSF. And William "Chubby" Lyons also from St.Louis. Libro0 18:48, 15 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Helmut Demucke, I now believe was actually supposed to be a player named Harry Desmuke who did play for Simpkins in the early fifties and for the Steamfitters/Ray Dohles before that. He was about 6' 4" in height. Libro0 (talk) 03:58, 25 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Desmuke played also baseball, was born in 1928, and weighted 198. Can be him? --necronudist (talk) 09:52, 25 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

The US roster listed among those above has several mystery players that I have been trying to 'solve'. Mr. Keough indicated that they may have been part of the tryouts for the U.S. team. I have looked this up and I will list the rosters that were divided up as East and West. The two teams played each other on April 2, 1950 after which a committee selected 15 players and at least one alternate. The East squad was GK John Bryndza(Brookhattan); DF Erwin Blasterwald (NY Americans), Joe Rego(FRP Delgada), Joe Maca(Hispano), John O'Connell(NYA); MF E. McIlveney (Phi. Nats), Walter Bahr(Phi. Nats), Alfonso Marino(Brookhattan), Andrew Suhert(Rochester); FW Lloyd Monsen(NY Americans), Arty Sheppell(Kearney Scots), Joe Gaetjens(Brookhattan), John Souza(FRP Delgada), Ben McLaughlin(Phi. Nats), Ed Souza(FRP Delgada), Carl Erickson(Brookhattan). The West squad was GK Frank Borghi(Simpkins), Gino Gardassanich(Chi. Slovaks), Joe Silovsky(Chi. Sparta); DF Steve Negoesco(SFU), Bob Annis(Simpkins), Richie Gossic(Morgan); MF Harry Keough(McMahon), Charley Colombo(Simpkins), Jeff Coombes(Chi. Vikings), Dominic Rossi(Dunlevy); FW Adam Wolanin(Chi. Eagles), Gino Pariani(Simpkins), Bob Craddock(Harmarville), Nick DiOrio(Harmarville), Frank Wallace(Simpkins), Pete Matevich(Chi. Slovaks), Alex Boissiere(LA Scots). The referees for the game between the two squads were Justin Keenoy(St.L) and Prudencio Garcia(St.L). The selection committee was Chairman Fred Netto(Chicago), Harry Fairfield(Pittsburgh), James McGuire(Brooklyn), Edward Sullivan(Philadelphia), and William Lyons(St.Louis). This may be a little extra info but I am trying to be thorough in determining where the extra names came from. Players I thought may have been included- Herman Wecke, Amiel Muniz, Harry Desmuke- while probable candidates given their league performances were not mentioned at all for the player pool. Furthermore, since the tryout game took place in St.Louis and was covered by Post-Dispatch soccer writer Dent McSkimming(the only U.S. reporter at 1950WC) I would consider it among the most reputable of sources. Uh, that's another great catch, Libro0! --necronudist (talk) 21:23, 4 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

It turns out that Amiel Muniz and Harry Desmuke did in fact play for the US although it was in an unnofficial match. The practice game played against Besiktas of Turkey took place at Public Schools Stadium in St.Louis. Muniz and Desmuke saw action in that game. It appears that they may have been added to that game to replace some of the eastern US players who did not make the trip to St. Louis. Since the USSFA president was Walter Giesler also of ST.L, he may have submitted a roster to FIFA that still included their names wether by accident or as alternates. The second practice match against England at Randall Island on Jun 18 did not include them. Muniz and Desmuke were in St.L on Jun 18 playing in a game against touring Jonkoping of Sweden. The St.L squad was a McMahon-Lennemann combined team. which included Muniz and Wecke. Desmuke, a Simpkin, played in this game as a replacement for injured Ollie Bohlman. A possible explanation for the 'Antonello Valentini' name: I noticed that the roster for the Jun 18 England match used the name Valicenti instead of Wallace. The only other name that vaguely resembles Valentini is a linesman in the May 31 Besiktas game named Henry Vallina. Also William Jeffrey was not named as the US coach until June 1 and accepted the position several days later. Up until then the originally selected coach had been Erno Schwarz. Amazing research, Libro0! However, the only way to know what happened is to find a newspaper with the list of called up players and then see in the next issues if somebody resigned or were substituted... Not so easy, unfortunately! --necronudist (talk) 08:58, 17 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Actually the information submitted above comes from the entire run of the St.L P-D from 1949 up to and including the 1950WC. I also checked the NYTimes for most of the same period. Any other information would likely have to come from correspondence between federations and their committees. I am fairly satisfied with what there is on Muniz and Desmuke. I have some leads on Valentini and Moniz but I will have to check the Boston Globe for those. There were changes made from the original selection following the tryout game mentioned above. The original selections that did not appear on the final roster are as follows: Coach Erno Schwarz(NYA), DF Richie Gossic(Morgan), and Ben McLaughlin (Nats). There was only one GK selected and that was Gardassanich. They went with one GK in order to have more MF spots, however GK Borghi was added later as was FW Ed Souza. The odd thing about Valentini is that the FIFA rosters shows him as having actually played in the game v Spain but does not appear at all in the other games while Frank Moniz and Helmut Demucke are listed as subs in all three games. If anyone happens to be in the neighborhood of Switzerland and can stop by FIFA and look at the original documentation that would be great. Libro0 (talk) 22:03, 28 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

I am inclined to agree about the baseball. This matches some of what I have on him. It looks like he stopped baseball near the time he started becoming more prominent in soccer. With his two sports plus unofficial cap and possible alternate status he might be notable. I also saw this article on him from St.L P-D 2/26/51: "A player chosen for his good comportment on the field during the current soccer season will be chosen for the new Harry Desmuke award at a meeting of the Craig Club Athletic Association tonight. Two players from each of the nine teams bearing the name Craig Club this season, will be selected by the team managers and from this group a single player will be chosen by a committee. The Desmuke trophy is named for the professional league player, a halfback on the Simpkins team, who helped organize the Craig Club and is now a soldier at Fort Leonard Wood". Atillo LÓPEZ Sosa edit

Is it possible that he's the Atletico Madrid player Atilio Lopez Rivero? Lopez Sosa was born in 1925 and Lopez Rivero in 1926, they both played in the 1950s, maybe they're the same player. In the first 1950s he played in Club Nacional (like Lopez Sosa) and in the middle, after the world cup, he crossed the ocean to play with an european club (like Lopez Rivero). What do you think? --necronudist 07:59, 29 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Mexico, Chile and Paraguay: controversies edit

An anonymous user has edited Mexican, Chilean, and Paraguay teams providing some interesting links. However there are plenty of sites (e.g. playerhistory.com) who says the contrary, but they can be wrong.

Mexico edit

Here is shown clearly that Cordoba was a GK. FIFA site obviously avoid the problem [1] [2] [3]

Chile edit

Here is clearly stated that Urroz was a DF. FIFA site says he was a GK, but 3 GKs on the roster wasn't common at the time...

Paraguay edit

Here is clearly stated that Centurion was a GK. FIFA avoid the question [4] [5]

Let me know what you think about all of this. I'll keep the original version until the controversies aren't solved. --necronudist 10:28, 5 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

This is the reason the reason that I put a note at the bottom for the early World Cups. The information is sometimes full of holes furthermore if FIFA doesn't have it then I certainly would not consider them the 'go to' source as many people feel they should be just because they are FIFA. None of the above sources actually state the position, they are only listed in a traditional order (GK, DFs, MFs, FWs). This too I would not consider foolproof. The Chilean player is listed as GK but his birthdate is listed as 1-1-1900 like some others. It appears when the date is not known they use a default. Maybe GK is a default position as well. Either way I feel the need to find out who the source's sources are and maybe go from there. I want to state here that I feel that regarding accuracy and referncing the early world cups should be treated differently. From say 30-62 or at least 30-50 which was before jersey numbering. FIFA links are useless, I wrote'em just to show a wider view of the problem. However I think we can trust on those sources... --necronudist 21:21, 6 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

I think there is a lot of dependence on net sources because it is easy. But for the early tournaments literary sources like local and national newspapers would be best. I know those are hard to come by but it would be worth it. Libro0 02:41, 10 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Bolivia edit

Many sources say it was Héctor Saavedra Araújo, many other say Humberto... who's right? Plus, many Bolivian sources say it was Víctor Celestino Algañaraz and not Algarañaz --necronudist (talk) 16:48, 5 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

I looked in several books and this made this situation messier. In the book 'Bolivia, El Mundo, y El Futbol' it says Celestino Algaranaz and Hector Saavedra. In the book 'Epopeya del futbol Boliviano' it says Argaranaz 3 times(twice in text and once in a lineup card), Algaranazg once in a lineup card, Algaranaz 7 times on lineup cards and once in the index, and Alganaraz once. England edit

There were only 21 players on the team. The FA had included Stanley Matthews and Jim Taylor, of Fulham, in the party to tour Canada. Manchester United, due to tour the USA, had requested the release of Aston and Cockburn. Neil Franklin, the automatic choice at centerhalf, left the World Cup squad for the financial benefits of Santa Fe of Colombia. Libro0 (talk) 02:45, 30 September 2009 (UTC)Reply
