From the Hornady Manual: .32 Winchester Special, test rifle Winchester 1894, barrel: 1 in 16" twist. Bullet: .321" diameter. ""The 32 Special had its origin in in 1895 when it was introduced by Winchester in their Model 94 lever action. The primary intent of the cartridge was to offer a smokeless loaded round that could be reloaded with black powder. Hornady lists their .30-30 test rifle as Winchester 1894, barrel: 1 in 12" twist. Bullet: .308" diameter. That's a .013" difference in diameter of bullet, and 4" in rate of twist of barrel. The rate of twist appears to be a compromise between full velocity factory loaded jacketed bullet ammo and reloaded ammo at lower velocity; wear on the .32 special barrel may degrade accuracy with high velocity factory ammo before it degrades accuracy with lower velocity reloads.
