History edit

The band was formed in 2017 by guitarist and composer Serge (Sei) Nakauchi Pelletier, trombonist Étienne Lebel, drummer Ian Lettre, guitarist Hidetaka Yoneyama, bassist Mishka Stein, and flautist Yuki Isami. The band was originally formed as a one-off tribute to Japanese musician Takeshi Terauchi.

The group made their stage debut during the 2017 edition of Montreal's Distorsion Psych Fest organized by show promoters and record label Mothland. TEKE::TEKE (whose name refers to the onomatopoeia that describes the typical sound of the 'surf' guitar), was an entirely instrumental group until singer and visual artist Maya Kuroki joined the band for their second show, this time presented as part of POP Montreal festival. The group, initially thought of as a tribute project, inspired by the sound, the energy, and the chemistry of the seven musicians during the first few shows, decided to continue this musical adventure, moving away from covers, opting instead for original music composition.

A first EP entitled 'Jikaku' was released in 2018 on Montreal label Ray-On, and featured two original compositions ('Omae No Karada' and 'Jikaku') as well as two cover songs ('Ai No Kizuna' by Takeshi Terauchi and 'Chicca Na Toki Kara' by Maki Asakawa). Their first full-length album, entitled 'Shirushi', was released in 2021 on the American independent record label Kill Rock Stars. It made the long list for the 2021 Polaris Music Prize and won the award for 'Album of the year - Other languages' at the 44th ADISQ gala. That same year, they released two new songs ('Onigami' and 'Kodomonokuni') available as a 7-inch record through Seattle-based label SUB POP's Exclusive Vinyl Club and on digital platforms.

The group released their second full-length album, 'Hagata', in June 2023, again via label Kill Rock Stars. After first being seen on stage at home in Quebec, at festivals such as the Montreal International Jazz Festival, Osheaga festival, and the Festival d'été de Québec, it began touring across Canada, the United States, the UK and Europe.
