Sussex County Technical School is a county-wide technical public high school in Sussex County, New Jersey, as part of the Sussex County Vocational School District and is located in Sparta Township. It is the home of the McNeice Auditorium and the Fighting Mustangs. The school's official colors are hunter green and gold.

As of the 2010-11 school year, the school had an enrollment of 567 students and 52.7 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), for a student–teacher ratio of 10.76:1. There were 52 students (9.2% of enrollment) eligible for free lunch and 38 (6.7% of students) eligible for reduced-cost lunch.[1][2]

The Technical School is also the home of all five of the Umptysquatch human powered submarines (1, 2, 3.2, 4 and 5), and the teams of Engineering students who built them.[3]

Athletics

The Sussex County Technical School Mustangs participate in the Northwest Jersey Athletic Conference, following a reorganization of sports leagues in Northern New Jersey by the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA).[4] The school is categorized by the NJSIAA as North I, Group II.

  • Fall: Football, Boys' Soccer, Girls' Soccer, Cross-Country (Boys' & Girls'), Cheerleading, and Girls' Tennis.
  • Winter: Boys' Basketball, Girls' Basketball, Cheerleading, Bowling (Boys' & Girls'), and Snowboard/ Ski Club.
  • Spring: Track and Field (Boys' & Girls'), Baseball,and Softball.[5]

Sussex Tech also is involved with NJ REBEL; a youth led anti-tobacco group with funds from the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services. The group is also countywide. Sussex Tech REBEL currently has 38 active members and is becoming one of the school's largest activities.

Awards

  • 2009 Champions of the Grill

The team made up of students from the Sussex Tech culinary department competed in the amateur division of Champions of the Grill. They won the overall title for their entries in the Grilled Chicken and Smoked Beef categories. Additionally, they placed 1st in the Pork Rib Category and finished their winning streak by taking home the trophy for overall best in the Amateur Division.[6]

  • Skills USA

In the 2009 National Competition, Josh Stephens earned the gold medal in Power Equipment Technology. He went on to earn the Gold Medal again in 2010.[7] Additionally, at the 2009 New Jersey State Championships, gold medals were earned in six competitions, silver in eight, and bronze in four.[8]

Graduation rate

According to the state's NCLB Report, the graduation rate for Sussex County Technical School for the class of 2008 was 96.2%. This rate exceeds the State high school graduation rate of approximately 93.1%.[12]
