The Space Foundation is a nonprofit organization that supports the global space industry through information and education programs. It is a resource for the entire space community - industry, national security organizations, civil space agencies, private space companies and the military around the world. It also supports educators, students and journalists with information and education programs.
Industry events
The Space Foundation annually hosts major industry events, including the National Space Symposium[1] in Colorado Springs, Colo. In 2011, more than 9,000 people participated in the 27th National Space Symposium. The 28th National Space Symposium is scheduled for April 16-19, 2012.
Work Environment
In 2011, the Space Foundation was designated by The NonProfit Times and Best Companies Group as among the Best Non-Profit Organizations to Work for 2011. [2] It was the only Colorado-based organization to make the list and ranked number 19 out of the 50 organizations honored nation-wide.

Space Technology Hall of Fame
The Space Foundation has conducted the Space Technology Hall of Fame[21] since 1988, inducting dozens of technologies and honoring hundreds of organizations and individuals that transform technology originally developed for space exploration into products that help improve the quality of life here on Earth. Induction into the Space Technology Hall of Fame affords space technology innovators much deserved recognition. It also serves to increase public awareness of the benefits of space technology and encourage further innovation.

Space Certification
The Space Foundation builds awareness of the benefits of space through the Space CertificationTM [85]program, which demonstrates how space technologies improve life on Earth and makes space more interesting and accessible to everyone. Products and services that display the Space Certification seal are guaranteed to have stemmed from or been dramatically improved by technologies originally developed for space exploration or to have significant impact in teaching people about the value of space utilization. Using the official Space Certification seal provides a marketing edge for partners, demonstrates how space technologies improve life on Earth and makes space more accessible to everyone.
Categories:
Certified Technology Products Certified Technology Products or related services directly result from space technology or space program development. Examples include Eagle Eyes Eyewear, Outlast Phase Change Materials and GPS.
Certified Educational Products Certified Educational Products are used in educational environments to stimulate interest in and knowledge about space. Supporting these products helps achieve the Space Foundation's education mission and further inspires new generations. Examples include the Kansas Cosmosphere and the SPACE.COM [86] website.
Space Foundation Education Programs
The Space Foundation is developing the next generation - and building the overall technological strength of the nation - through programs that stimulate students' interest and skills in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).[87]
Programs include:
- The Space Foundation Discovery Institute (SFDI)[88], based in Colorado Springs, Colo., provides professional development, training and support for teachers and students from around the world. SFDI houses classrooms, the AGI (Analytical Graphics) Space Missions Simulator [89], a NASA Educator Resource Center and the Mars Yard[90] simulated Martian terrain and robotics laboratory.
- Space Across the Curriculum[91] week-long intensive graduate-level courses provide PreK-12 educators with space-related STEM knowledge and content that is instantly transferable to the classroom. Participants can earn continuing education credits or graduate credits at Colorado State University - Pueblo, Regis University or the College of Education at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs (UCCS) or work toward a master's degree in related disciplines from Regis University or UCCS. Scholarships are available.[92]
- New Horizons Space Education Program[93], a science enrichment program that infuses STEM education into a community through teacher workshops, student programs, town-hall meetings, field trips and astronaut and space professional visits.
- STARS Program (Science, Technology and Academic Readiness for Space)[94], a hands-on science enrichment program for students based on schools' specific academic needs.
- Audience with an Astronaut Program[95], special presentations by astronauts that give students the opportunity to learn first-hand what it takes to become a space explorer.
- Tours of Space Exhibits[96], tours of space exhibits for secondary students to experience the excitement of space at conferences, museums and trade shows.
- Career Awareness and Workforce Development Programs[97], education, outreach and networking activities for undergraduate students, college graduates and transitioning military who are looking for careers in the space industry
- Teacher Liaisons[98], advocates for space-related education who participate in workshops and education programs at the National Space Symposium and receive Space Foundation training and resources to further integrate space into their classrooms.
- National Science Standards Lesson Bank, free downloadable PreK-12 national science standards-based lessons. [99].
- Jack Swigert Aerospace Academy[100], an aerospace-focused middle school created in conjunction with Colorado Springs School District 11 that drives science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics (STEAM) proficiency through a space-related curriculum, access to SFDI laboratories and learning opportunities and involvement with the Space Foundation.
