Saules is a municipality in the Jura bernois administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland. It is located in the French-speaking Bernese Jura (Jura Bernois).
History
It was first mentioned in the Confirmation Act of Pope Eugene III in 1148. The Bellelay Abbey and the Bishop of Basel owned land in Saules.
Geography
Saules has an area of 4.3 km2 (1.7 sq mi). Of this area, 43.9% is used for agricultural purposes, while 52.8% is forested. The rest of the land, (3.3%) is settled.[3]
Demographics
Saules has a population (as of 31 December 2011) of 153.[1] As of 2007[update], 1.3% of the population was made up of foreign nationals. Over the last 10 years the population has decreased at a rate of 0%. Most of the population (as of 2000[update]) speaks French (91.5%), with German being second most common ( 7.9%) and Albanian being third ( 0.6%). It is mostly protestant.
In the 2007 election the most popular party was the SVP which received 46% of the vote. The next three most popular parties were the FDP (20.7%), the local small left-wing parties (11.5%) and the SPS (10.8%).
The age distribution of the population (as of 2000[update]) is children and teenagers (0–19 years old) make up 22% of the population, while adults (20–64 years old) make up 60.4% and seniors (over 64 years old) make up 17.7%. In Saules about 56.2% of the population (between age 25-64) have completed either non-mandatory upper secondary education or additional higher education (either university or a Fachhochschule).
Saules has an unemployment rate of 2.37%. As of 2005[update], there were 21 people employed in the primary economic sector and about 8 businesses involved in this sector. 6 people are employed in the secondary sector and there are 2 businesses in this sector. 4 people are employed in the tertiary sector, with 2 businesses in this sector.[3]
