Anniversary pages

I'd like to recommend making an aniversary subpage for every month. That way they can be edited as needed without loosing info. The month variable could be used to control the display, thus making it work automagically. The code would look something like this:

The "current" month of October would be kept at Portal:Music/Anniversaries/October for example. (I've copied the text to that page as an example and for the other existing months.).

Redlinks on portal head.

Just out of curiosity, is it normal for redlinks to be present on Portal:Music? How is this different from the Main Page?

French Music Portal

Improving the portal

The portal definitely needs updating. Regarding the featured article, which hasn't been changed in over 3 months, I was wondering how a featured article was chosen? Perhaps a list should be drawn up here, and a new featured article put up every month?

Also, about the introduction, which comes across as a bit stern, especially compared with the introduction of the French Wikipedia's Music Portal, which was a featured portal there. I think we should use their introduction, which is:

What is music?

Music is an art and at the same time a science.

It is an art since from the dawn of time, humanity has known music. In magical incantations, in ritual dances, etc.

It is a science since it is restricted by norms and scientific and mathematical rules.

In all communities, there exists an ancient and traditional music alongside a music which is taught in schools and conservatoires.

But whatever its nature and audience, music touches us and moves us, it makes us think and it makes us dream.

• I concur with your idea of adopting their format/framework. The teal look definitely works for me. Perhaps we should push for making it the official colour for Music-related templates?
  • There seem to be disparate pages for requests regarding music-related articles. At the moment, I have yet to come up with a plan for how to pull these pages into the portal, but I think it will be a worthwhile endeavour. Regarding the featured article section I think it would be a good idea to have a 12 month cycle, the same as what the Anniversaries section uses. People could suggest articles here, and then a list could be drawn up for the next 12 months, with one article every month - or if there are more suggestions, perhaps even more frequently. • To the pair of questions you asked up front, my answer is yes. As for the proposed cycling scheme. I would look for notable events to include as soon as I can find them.

• There are a few birthdays mentioned in the anniversaries section which rotates, but that's only for every month. We could definitely have a seperate section for birthdays, and use a rotation system, and maybe integrate it with the "On this day in music history...", which has a nice ring to it. I don't know how many birthdays you have, but if it's one a week, that would mean creating one page for every week. The system would automatically rotate through the pages.

About the proposed cycling scheme, I mean about the featured article - is that what you mean by notable events? Madder 00:22, 21 June 2006 (UTC)

• You need to create a page for each day with corresponding birthdays, the page should be located as follows:

Portal:Music/Birthdays/TheMonth/TheDay

So for example, the page listing birthdays on the 21st of August would be at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portal:Music/Birthdays/August/21

New colors

I was just about to post about that when I got an edit conflict from this :-) The changes you've made are great, including the new system for news which looks much better. I'm not too sure about the colours though, I think the lighter blue colours we had before were more visually appealing and in general made things a lot clearer. Template proposal.

It seems that Wikipedia:WikiProject Albums have an album template, which is being used on several recordings site-wide. However, I have found the colour scheme selected for "Original albums" — orange — hurts my eyes.

I have posted a note on that project's talk page about the possible adoption of a different colour for that template. Hopefully, they will accept using a colour that is easier on the eyes, such as the one used for this page. This will help avoid duplication of effort. --Folajimi 20:26, 21 June 2006 (UTC)

Adding the Music Portal to the Portal browse bar

Important Articles

Perhaps this section on the portal should be merged with the Categories section - the French Music Portal has done this, where they list each Music Category with its most important articles. They also have some good images which we could use. Madder 22:38, 23 June 2006 (UTC)

Death

Problems with Suggest a featured article

The Suggest a featured article page seems to be getting little attention - there hasn't been a single vote on either of the two nominations there since it started. Is there any way of sorting this? Problem with Date of Birth section

Just noticed there's a problem with the date of birth section, at least on July 14. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portal:Music/DateOfBirth/July_14 looks absolutely fine, but when rendered on Portal:Music, the last item overflows into a weird box with a dotted line around it. See http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Portal:Music&oldid=63033220 in case this is just for July 14. First of all, this page is looking better and better. Nice work! Question about FA's: what's the current guideline for deciding on one? Or do we even have one? Also, does the "Recent FA's" refer to FA's on the portal or on the main page? Gregorian chant just made FA status would be a good candidate for the page IMHO. Pink Floyd's been there a while. Upload classical sheet music?

For the older classical pieces, is it a copyright violation to upload musical works? For example, could I upload a Mozart's concerto sheet music and make it available to everyone? PDF's are images and WP accepts them just fine. I think this would be a great way to make music available to everyone.--Tbeatty 05:30, 1 September 2006 (UTC)

• I think the copyright belongs to the publisher of the sheet music. So for example if you printed the sheet music yourself (eg. using notation software), then it would be OK. Madder 17:36, 3 September 2006 (UTC)

music by decade

Especially for "popular" genres (jazz reggae rock music-hall etc) it woudl be useful to have a groupig of articles by decade... or is it somewhere lese on wikipeida and I've missed it ? jm

Hello, just to note we need more anniversaries for the portal, in particular for the months of November, December and January - the pages for these months are currently blank, so when these months come round, there won't be anything showing on Portal:Music. Anniversaries

I've discovered an amazing resource at List of musical events. Is there a way of getting some of this content to automatically appear in the anniversaries section as it gets updated? Because that would be really cool, and would solve the problem of the Anniversaries section being a bit light on content at the moment. Madder 22:13, 19 September 2006 (UTC)

Music Portal revamp

Unfortunately the Music Portal failed in its nomination as a featured portal candidate. It's a shame, but a lot of good feedback was given, and looking through it now, I think a lot of improvements can still be made, aka. another total revamp. The main issues seem to be:

• Layout: the 'Explore' box at the top is cool, but takes up too much space. Is there a way of having the same content within it, but using up space more sparingly? The other issue I have with it is what should actually go in it - reverts are always having to be made when users add things to it. How should we decide what goes in it? At the moment we're relying on some 'vital articles' list, but should we? And there seem to be other places listing recommended music articles and so on.
• Today's Birthdays: this a really valuable resource, but it's very long, so is there a way of getting it so that just some parts from it are shown on the portal page, with a link to another page with the whole thing? Also, there are some red links within it, these shouldn't be shown on the portal page.
• Anniversaries: For some months, the list is very short, for others, it's very very long - could the same be done as above? And the short lists should perhaps be expanded... or perhaps not?
• Any other ideas to make the portal even better?...

Regarding anniversaries... I noticed that birthdays were included in that list; an action which defeats the purpose of having a separate section on birthdays. Historic releases of recordings, deaths, and other notable events will be much better suited for such a category.

Regarding birthdays... One simple solution would be to create another page which contains — at most — a dozen entries for each day. Then, a link from that page to the extended page for more information. The shorter pages could then be the ones featured on the Portal's main page. (FWIW, my attention is directed at improving this category; as such, I am somewhat unavailable to hunt down information on legitimate anniversaries.)

Regarding aesthetics... Unfortunately, I am unable to comment on this matter. IMHO, it is much more important to include content at this point in time. However, if someone else is willing to spend time on that, that's fine by me.

Finally, it is unclear to me why it is important to have this portal become a "featured portal"; this has never been a factor for my involvment with the portal. --Cheers, Folajimi (leave a note) 02:28, 1 November 2006 (UTC)

Hi, these ideas all sound very good, and the explore box looks much better. I hope we can implement it all. Regarding featured portal, I'm not saying it's a necessity or aim - the aim of this portal is to make Music articles on Wikipedia more accessible, nothing else - but when the portal was a candidate for featured portal, some interesting criticisms came up which I think should be addressed primarily for this portal's aim of making Music articles more accessible. I think the portal's looking so much better than it used to, but it could look even better! So I hope we can resolve the issues brought up by the criticisms made and make this a truly excellent portal. Madder 03:52, 2 November 2006 (UTC)

Browser incompatiblity?

Hi this is just to let u know that the music portal is all garbled in my particular browser. I have headings from some articles sections lying all over the page and some articles are actualy layered on top of other articles.

Birthdays & Anniversaries problems

I think the Birthdays section is a really useful section of the portal, but it's just too long. Is there any way we can trim it down so that only part of it shows (with a link to the rest) and with no red links? Also, is there any way we can tie the Birthdays and Anniversaries sections in with List of musical events? To be honest, I think there's a lot of duplication going on. • Correct me if I err, but it seems that the content in question is rather stagnant. Perhaps now is the time to re-evaluate if this is the best use of the real estate on the portal's main page. If it's not concealed, the entry appears like this:

Wendell Phillips Culley (January 8, 1906 –[[ June {{{6}}}| June {{{6}}}]], 1983), American trumpeter, would have turned 101 this year.

I wasn't sure how to fix it so I just commented it out for the time being, so it can quickly be reinstated when the problem is sorted.I think it might have something to do with the last variable in the template entry being a month (June) rather than the specific date (a number), but I'm not sure? I think the real problem is that hidemain=true isn't being put in enough and so the list is too long and full of red links. I've been going through putting in hidemain=true for some time now but it's a pain in the neck, and I've even looked into an automated way of doing it but can't find anything. I don't think dividing it into separate sections would help, rather it would make the whole thing even more laborious than it already is. We really need some automated way of sticking hidemain=true into entries with red links, and every other odd entry to shorten the list, because at the moment it's just making Portal:Music look a plain mess, and I just can't keep up with having to update it the whole time. Single calendar

As it stands, a new calendar has to be created annually for each month of birthdays. For example, Portal:Music/DateOfBirth/February/2007 will be useless next year because the current month fails to account for the extra date of the leap year. This means that Portal:Music/DateOfBirth/February/2008 will have to be created, and the day the month starts will have to be recalculated.

Is it possible to have a single list of calendar dates, which automatically adjusts to determine which day of the week the month begins? It would also avoid having to manually determine how many rows of weeks needs to be "hard coded" into each template.

An apropos example of the row calculation would be Portal:Music/DateOfBirth/December/2006, which happened to span across six weeks. (Note that the same could be said for any other month — except February of course...) --Cheers, Folajimi (leave a note) 14:29, 20 February 2007 (UTC)

I'm pretty sure that this is impossible with the current magic words. However, one way to save time would be to do a big transfer for the next year or two from the main calendar pages, like {{FebruaryCalendar2007}} and {{FebruaryCalendar2007Source}}.

Alternatively, we could ask the owner of the bot which made the main calendar source pages to run the bot again, and include an optional variable that we could use to make each calendar link to the DOB page, rather than the article about that date. Then, instead of creating new pages for each month, we would link to the main calendar page for that month, which would be updated by the updater of those pages. I thought that was a good idea too, but tried and failed miserably (technically challenged). Anyway, I just now finally took the time to check into what Firefox was, downloaded it as my new web browser, and what a difference. The page is perfect. I use Windows 2000 and had IE 6.0, of which has been screwing up lately anyway like shutting down, etc., very aggravating, so I think I'm really going to like Firefox as a browser, never actually knew there were choices before, (duh). Music video stuck in my head

Hey ppl

I was wondering if you could help me. I have this music video playing over and over in my head but I cant remember who the artist is or what the song is. I know this is a long shot, but if can help me, please do.

The music video starts off with a guy in casual clothes and he finds this balloon with a womans face on it. He tries to catch her, but fails, then she lets him catch her (the balloon) they walk down the street and a bunch of kids see them. One of the kids has a ketty and shoots the balloon-faced-girl and she pops. Its a beautiful duet between these two.

Folajimi has finished the birthdays entries, and Madder has submitted a request for peer review. It looks to me like this Portal is ready to be featured. • Totally agree. A few points about the to-do list though:

1. I don't think quotes are actually a good idea. We'll get into a whole debate about which quotes should actually be there, and also they seem to detract from the main content below (I would criticise the decision to use quotes on the French portal). As a compromise however, maybe some quotes could go in the 'Did You Know' section?
2. I agree with what is said on Portal talk:Music/Important, there are too many Featured Articles listed in the 'Explore...' box. There should be a limit.
3. ...And then featured here we come! (let's hope! :-)

• I agree that there do seem to be a lot of recently featured music-related articles on Wikipedia to do with Slayer. However, featured articles aren't chosen by one person. Instead, one person has to put up an article to become featured, and then any Wikipedia user can either agree or disagree with the nomination. Clearly in this case there have been a lot of improvements made to several Slayer-related articles meaning that they were all worthy of featured-article status. Templates seeking approval

I have created a set of music Navboxes, and I'm trying to seek approval. Each one covers a certain genre or category. Now I realize we already have a Template:Navbox musical artist. I feel that one template can't support all genres of musc (suppose if the one template was changed, it would affect all other template, which could be a pain). The templates can be found HERE. I have only created navboxes for "solo hip hop artist", "hip hop groups" (i.e. D12, G-Unit, NWA, etc.), "solo pop singer", "pop group" (i.e. Destiny's Child, NSYNC, etc.), "solo rock singer" (i.e. John Lennon, Paul McCartney, etc.), "rock band", and "other". Portal:Heavy metal

I reckon Portal:Heavy metal (which is up at FPoc) is a worthy candidate for inclusion in the subportals section, but it's hard to see how the design could be adjusted. Any thoughts? CloudNine 08:20, 6 October 2007 (UTC)

I would recommend removing sub-subportals, such as classical guitar, which is a subportal of guitar. Or removing specific and unupdated portals such as eurovision and pipeorgan. Reducing the size of the images should also be looked at, as it would give room for another row. Another option could be to make a music portals template such as {{military browsebar}}. sound samples for musical instruments

I would find it very helpful if articles on musical instruments included sound samples. While it may appear somewhat useless in case of the sound of a piano or a violin, it does much less so when one would like to feel the difference between a clarinet and an obeo. I myself noticed that when listenig to instrumental classical music I am often not capable of clearly establishing what instrument I am hearing.

It may be interesting to agree on a simple melody which could then be interpreted on various instruments thereby making it easy to compare the sound. dpavlic 17:41, 25 November 2007 (UTC)

Is it useful for solfege/harmony/...?

I built this tables about notes-keys. Maybe you can find it useful to put in any article, it's up to you. On the other hand, it shows how some notes articles are not done: could be done a redirect as in G-flat minor and A-sharp major (I'm just starting learning music, so I don't know myself if it would be correct). Box formatting

Malyctenar, I don't understand this change, from this formatting to this. Certain sections should be split into two columns, as they were, to reduce the amount of display space taken up by the box on the main Portal page. Λυδαcιτγ 01:13, 19 June 2008 (UTC)

Try watching it in 1024*768. The template was a terrible mess: Stuffing the "Composers & musicians" into a column with 20% width, and THEN splitting it into two, means most of the names were broken on two lines; together with centering creating staggered edges, this made it rather hard to read the contents. This split was especially pointless for the genres & forms column, which (even bloated by occasional linebreaking) took up less then half of the table's height. And there was a lot of blankspace on the bottom of the other columns as well.

I do admit that some names fit into the narrow semicolumn, i. e. my edit increased the total height of the table. To reduce it back, I see these solutions: Either separate the few modern pop musicians from the majority of classical composers (which would be a good idea anyway) and put them on the side as well (utilizing some more blank space). Or, return to the "two equally filled columns" layout, but that would probably require using a table code directly and not the inflexible col templates. I'm willing to code either, provided I don't step on anybody's toes. What do you say? --Malyctenar (talk) 10:33, 19 June 2008 (UTC)

Yes, I see what you mean. However, at 1280x800, with no broken names, the height of the box is nearly doubled by the change (see images). If you can get the split columns to work with a custom-coded table, that would be excellent. Λυδαcιτγ 00:58, 26 June 2008 (UTC)

Why no progressive rock in genres?

Sorry if I'm posting this incorrectly, but I couldn't help that progressive rock--arguably one of the most prevalent geres of rock in the 70s--is not listed in the "genres" section. No Jazz Composers? Just Mostly Classical!?

I Know I'm new here, but I joined to address matters such as these(Lack of Diversity Imagination & Recognition{as well as flaws}). Only six out of twenty six are not Classical Composers. Thats why I suggest any of the following Composers:
Duke Ellington, James Reese Europe, John Philip Sousa, Benny Goodman, Jelly Roll Morton, Fats Waller, Django Reinhardt, Oscar Peterson, Thelonious Monk, Irving Berlin, Count Basie, Sun Ra, George Gershwin, John Coltrane or Miles Davis to replace Jean Sibelius in the Top 26. --Morahman7vn (talk) 02:31, 8 August 2008 (UTC)

Musical Notation in Articles?

I've noticed that articles which involve the writing of musical score do so by inserting graphics. Therefore, if a user wishes to notate something they must use an external program to do so and save as an image. I was wondering if it would be possible to introduce musical notation like that which is used in mathematical articles to express formulae.

I'm not sure whether Wikipedia uses something MathML or LaTeX based for its mathematics, however that is the sort of thing I'm talking about. MusicTex perhaps?

Heaviness/lightness?

"Music can be in many forms of heaviness and lightness, heaviest being black viking metal, lightest being petite classical."

This sentence in the portal intro just stands out to me as very strange. While I'm not refuting it, I'm not so sure it should be stated in such a blankly authoritative manner either. If we're going to talk about the general qualities of music in the intro, isn't it best to stick to the better established ideas of tempo, rhythm, and dynamics? Bands?

Many bands turn up under WikiProject Musicians (under WikiProject Biography). Shouldn't the "band" be over under WikiProject Music somewhere? I see no where to put bands? -- Mjquin_id (talk) 06:51, 27 January 2009 (UTC)

Some bands turn up as Musicians but I agree that there is a problem with where to put bands, of whatever description. I came here seeking a template for River City Brass Band. I looked at other brass bands, and Brass band and Concert band, but these articles don't seem to have any project templates in their talk pages. Infobox Edition Proposal

I propose to add to the Artist Infobox a section where it shows the artist's influences, and to whom they influenced; just like the one in the Philosophy area. Here's an example:

Karl Heinrich Marx

I believe this addition will give a better understanding of the different periods of music and which artists got their "special sound" from. Kind of like saying:
Queen was influenced by The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, The Who, Black Sabbath, Slade, Deep Purple and David Bowie.

Queen influenced Anthrax, Nirvana, Def Leppard, Dream Theater, Extreme, Trivium, Foo Fighters, Franz Ferdinand, George Michael, Green Day, Guns N' Roses, Iron Maiden, Journey, Kansas, Katy Perry, Keane, Lady Gaga, Manic Street Preachers, Meat Loaf, Metallica, Mika, Muse, My Chemical Romance, Panic at the Disco, Queensrÿche, Van Halen, Radiohead, Robbie Williams, Trent Reznor, Steve Vai, Sum 41, Styx, The Flaming Lips, The Killers, and The Smashing Pumpkins.

Hello,

I would like to know what thinking about the source Hit Parade Italia. Because it's used for songs like the Good Article "Into the Groove" or "Hungry Like the Wolf" inside the charts with the name of FIMI. But the Federazione Industria Musicale Italiana was born in 1992. So how how FIMI could rank in 1982 and 1985 ? What's more, according to the website :

"In Italia, la prima classifica di vendita settimanale risale al 1959 e fu pubblicata dall'ormai scomparsa rivista "Il Musichiere". Da allora, negli anni, si sono succedute diverse classifiche, più o meno autorevoli ed affidabili. @TaupeGun: Exactly, HPI has never had any kind of “official” status and should never have been used. In German Wikipedia We have very exact rules about Italian chart data (here), maybe that helps.
