I see some respectful "edit wars" going on between regarding the use of subheaders on several different levels. Since I don't know of any good place to ask for consensus on whether something belongs on the news page, I just wanted to throw my opinion up here.

Firstly, I think given how the news section has experienced "bloat" in the last few months with 20-40 items of wildly varying notability appearing each day, I think subheaders are the best thing that has happened to the Current Events page in a long time. It makes it so much more organized and readable. Yes we want to make them more consistent, but we definitely do not want to get rid of them.

Secondly, at times it looks like things have been divided not only into categories (such as Armed Conflicts and Science) but also into regions (such as Europe and Asia). Here, I personally feel it's gone a little too far. Maybe someday when 50-100 truly notable items are being reported daily, with a fairly even distribution throughout the world, this will be useful. But for now, using both methods of subdividing news items seems extraneous.

If we do choose one "method" (category or region) of dividing news items, I could see the argument for either method, but I would choose dividing by "category", for two reasons: because we emphasize an international view at Wikipedia where editors are more interested in specific topic areas than just local things, and because it would lead to a more even division of news between subtopics on most days.

If you guys have a better place to discuss this please let me know! :)
