Portal created edit

Started the portal - have tried to choose articles and pictures that I have not substantially editted! Markh 14:51, September 2, 2005 (UTC)

I am trying hard to build a collection of photographs for use in the Ancient Egyptian articles please see http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Merlin-UK/Egypt, I will keep adding what I can as I get around, work permitting. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Merlin-UK (talkcontribs) 14:24, 19 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Portal name edit

Good job Markh and the team. I think that the title of this portal is not relevant as it would be Egyptology. I suggest to change it and redirect Ancient Egypt to it. We are discussing the issue about the criteas of wikiportals and I believe that keeping this title as it is now would not be a good idea. -- Svest 18:19, 14 October 2005 (UTC)  Wiki me up™Reply

Thats a good idea - I think we can just swap the main pages - I will give it a go now! Markh 20:23, 14 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

Bata and Bat edit

I beg your pardon, but you mixed up the male god Bata with the female god Bat, see Bata (goddess). Meanwile I corrected the Article. You only have to move Bata (goddess) to Bat (goddess), because I do not dare it. I am a specialist for the male god Bata, because I studied Egyptology long years ago. Best wishes from --Gudrun Meyer 19:45, 1 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

I am very disappointed that I got no answer since May 24th 2007 in the Talk: Bata (goddess) and here. Now I’ll move Bata (goddess) to Bat (goddess). She is really written B3t, not Bata (cf. Faulkner, Pyramid Texts, Utterance 506, p. 181). You can find a new article concerning Bata (god), which I started today. Please excuse that it is only a stub, but you will find the best reference in it. Perhaps you are so kind to read that page. With kindest regards --Gudrun Meyer 20:15, 3 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
Meanwhile I moved it and corrected all internal links (except Category Discussion, where I didn't find it). --Gudrun Meyer 20:42, 3 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Requested move edit

This portal deals more with Ancient Egypt content than Egyptology content, which is too narrow a focus. Suggest moving to portal:Ancient Egypt. NB there is a redirect there which has more than one edit in its history and a talk page with some content on it, so need admin help if we move. Jeff Dahl (Talkcontribs) 03:16, 7 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

This was done the other way a couple of years ago: see Portal talk:Ancient Egypt. Do you have any input related to that comment? Dekimasuよ! 07:34, 15 November 2007 (UTC)Reply
When the portal was moved to Portal:Egyptology a few years ago, there is little indication on the talk page as to why. There are no actual reasons given except that someone thought it would be better. I talked with the portal's creator, markh, who doesn't mind either way. The reason I would move it to Portal:Ancient Egypt is because the portal does not simply focus on the study of ancient Egypt, which includes excavations, archaeologists, publications, and historical theories. Instead the portal talks about ancient Egypt in more general terms, such as pharaoh biographies, pictures of artifacts, customs and society etc. The portal does still talk about some Egyptology content, but is not focused only on that area. Moving to portal:Ancient Egypt will make the portal's content more accurately described and more appealing to readers. If the portal is moved, I would do a minor re-write to the introduction and change the templates which currently link to portal:Egyptology. Jeff Dahl (Talkcontribs) 17:10, 15 November 2007 (UTC)Reply
That's good enough for me. Moved to Portal:Ancient Egypt. Dekimasuよ! 00:26, 16 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Temples of a million years, Mortuary temples & Mortuary temple edit

I just find a bit confusing when I'm trying to distinguishing the differences between Temples of a Million years and Mortuary temple. According to the French version, both are directed into the same article. Are they actually the same thing? Besides, I believe Mortuary temples should also be merged into Mortuary temple or just be deleted.Onlim (talk) 10:22, 29 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

It is somewhat confusing, the temple of a million years is the correct name for what we in the west call the mortuary temple. Many of the Egyptian guides here state that it was built for the sole purpose of the mummification of the Pharaoh, however this is not the case as the construction of the temple of a million years and the tomb were usually commenced shortly after the coronation of the Pharaoh and was used throughout their lifetime and afterwards as the centre of their cult. Hieroglyphic expert for Nubian queen edit

Just created Amanitore. Other languages have her name in hieroglyphics but I don't know how on the english wiki. Any help? Victuallers (talk) 15:11, 29 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

I don't know if it helps, but I have just created a new template at Template:Infobox hieroglyphs based on its German wiki equivalent which enables article titles to be displayed in hieroglyphs and other scripts as desired. In addition there is a temporary one at Template:Infobox Hieroglyphen to facilitate the copying of the equivalent infobox from German Wikipedia with minimum knowledge of German and display it in English Wikipedia. --Bermicourt (talk) 18:25, 24 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Template proposals edit

User:Anarchangel/Template:Ancient Egyptian deities : a horizontal hideable list for articles. Also suggest changes to Template:Ancient Egyptian religion. The current version of the template is crowding things badly in articles like Set (mythology), and is too big to even put in Osiris and other articles at all. Template:War shows how multiple categories of articles can be hidden, to free up valuable space for images. Anarchangel (talk) 08:39, 31 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

I had missed the message about Template:Ancient Egyptian religion footer, and will use that for now. Anarchangel (talk) 08:49, 31 August 2009 (UTC)Reply
