19th century edit
- 1843 – Boston and Maine Railroad and Eastern Railroad reach an agreement to both lease the Portland, Saco and Portsmouth Railroad as a joint line to Portland, Maine.
- 1855 – The first train travels the entire transcontinental route of the Panama Railway.[1]
- 1879 – Construction of the Waimea Plains Railway, the first railway constructed under the District Railways Act of 1878, reaches Inverrcagill, New Zealand.[2]
- 1887 – Jay Gould purchases the Little Rock, Mississippi River and Texas Railway at foreclosure then deeds it to the St. Louis, Iron Mountain and Southern Railroad.[3]
- 1889 – The last passenger car of a Chicago and North Western Railroad train derails and overturns and is then dragged over tree stumps near Elmwood, Michigan; Michigan's Lieutenant Governor and an acquaintance are killed in the accident.[4]
- 1890 – Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad acquires a section of the McKeesport and Belle Vernon Railroad around Belle Vernon, Pennsylvania.[5]
- 1891 – The Amalgamated Railway Unions of the United Kingdom put forth their demands for shorter working hours under threat of a strike action across England.[6]
- 1892 – California Southern Railroad abandons the section of railroad through Temecula Canyon connecting to Fallbrook.[7]

- 1908 – Florida's Railroad Commissioners adopt rule number 12 of the state's general operating rules for railroads within the state; the rule mandates that railroad companies are required to immediately report by telegram any train wreck within the state beyond a simple derailment that involves injury or death to any person and follow up the telegram within five days with a full written report.[8]
- 1920 – Groundbreaking commences to begin construction of the Cincinnati Subway.[9]
- 1935 – Pennsylvania Railroad inaugurates electrified train service featuring its newly acquired GG1 electric locomotives between Washington, D.C., and New York City on the line that will come to be known as the Northeast Corridor.[10][11]
- 1962 – The last lines of streetcars in Washington, D.C., end operations.[10][11]
