- 1869 – The first line of what is now Athens Metro, in Greece, opens as Athens Piraeus Railway SA.
- 1900 – The Nehru Setu railway bridge opens, becoming the longest bridge in India.[1][2]
20th century edit
- 1912 – The Pacific Great Eastern Railway (predecessor of the British Columbia Railway) is incorporated to build a line from Vancouver north to a connection with the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway at Prince George, British Columbia.
- 1989 – MARC service in Bowie, Maryland, is moved to Bowie State station at Bowie State University, which had room for a large park-and-ride lot and more direct access to Route 197.[3][4]

- 1843 – Thomas Lowry, president of Minneapolis Street Railway 1877-1892, president of Twin City Rapid Transit, president of Soo Line Railroad 1889-1890 and 1892-1909, is born (d. 1909).
- 1850 – Henry E. Huntington, nephew of Collis P. Huntington and executive in charge of Pacific Electric Railway in the early part of the 20th century, is born (d. 1927).
