As of the census of 2000, there were 642 people, 263 households, and 184 families residing in the city. The population density was 96.9 people per square mile (37.4/km²). There were 309 housing units at an average density of 46.6/sq mi (18.0/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 95.79% White, 0.16% Black or African American, 1.09% Native American, 0.47% from other races, and 2.49% from two or more races. 1.71% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 263 households out of which 30.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.0% were married couples living together, 9.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.0% were non-families. 26.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size was 2.96.

In the city the population was spread out with 24.5% under the age of 18, 7.9% from 18 to 24, 23.5% from 25 to 44, 23.5% from 45 to 64, and 20.6% who were 65 years of age or older.
